Get into your BIOS by tapping either the delete key or the F2 key while the Toshiba splash screen is showing. Once in there you can manipulate the core and peripheral settings.

I have toshiba satellite L505-S5990 model.i have installed windows xp by changing the settings in Bios that is sata hard disk enabled as compatable mode from AHCI.if i change to AHCI i can't install...

If you would like to make use of the SATA controller's AHCI features, you should enable this BIOS feature. But please note that enabling this feature requires you to load the SATA controller driver during the Windows XP installation routine.
If you do not intend to use the AHCI features, it's recommended that you disable this BIOS feature. This allows you to use the native Windows XP driver. You won't need to load the SATA controller driver during the Windows XP installation routine.

Do i need (s)ata drivers for toshiba satellite u400? or i can install xp without a problem?

Start your laptop and goto your BIOS and check if SATA setting is available.if available then configured it in IDE Mode or disable it, (if disable option is available).
Now, you should be able to installed windows XP without any problem;

Usually these days,Laptop BIOS comes with little or standard setting;if that is the case;then you will need SATA driver during installation in other to recognise your SATA hard drive.

Urgent

I think the general problem with XP is now 'Hard Drive Not Found' error.

If the same case is with you then you need to download RAID dreiver for your SATA IDE or you have to make disable the SATA from your bois. If you can make disable SATA then XP will be installed. But if you can't have option to make it disable then you have to download driver as per your motherboard.

I think it will help you.

Thanks
Iqbal

Can't reinstall xp pro on my hp compaq nc6320

Stephane, I ran into the same problem after wiping out my Compaq nc6320 and trying to install XP Pro. The fix is to disable SATA Native mode. To do this: Enter F10 Setup then System Configuration>Device Configurations>SATA Native Mode and disable it, save the changes and now you should be able to install XP Pro. Remember, when I did this the drive was blank, I don't know if that makes a difference or not. Best of luck! Bryan P.S. If you want to enable SATA native mode after you have installed XP Pro check out this link: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1042050&admit=-682735245+1161793137260+28353475
