Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

My Magnavox tv model: MWC24T5A has a dvd player and a vcr built into the set. The tv works great. However, recently the dvd player stopped producing sound when a dvd disc is playing. The picture is fine, but there is no sound.

Make sure that your speakers is still connected. Also
check the controls (remote or on board) setting. It could
be on a mute mode.

SOURCE: Magnavox MWC24T5A

It is most likely a bad IR diode underneath the prisim in the VCR, common failure for those combination units. I have used a simple generic diode from Radio Shack or you can spend a little more and get the politically correct part from almost any electronics vendor like Vance Baldwin ot Tritronics.
Be observant when installing these they are polorized and go in only one direction. Getting one in reverse will burn up the new diode instantly.

SOURCE: Magnavox mwd 2206 dvd vcr player....shuts off with eject word across screen.

On a unit I checked with this same symptom, removing the top cover allows the unit to stay on and operate normally. There is some sort of sensor at the left middle of the chassis, which, when unblocked by any opaque object, allows the unit to remain on. A temporary fix (not advisable) would be to replace the top cover with a piece of clear plastic or taut saran wrap (no vent holes needed). It's unclear exactly where/what that sensor is from a cursory test. This is a work in progress on someone else's machine that I lack full access to.

Need to know if I can record from dvd to vcr on a magnavox ZV420MWB vcr/dvd combo

Magnavox ZV420MWB VCR/DVD Combo
The answer is YES YOU CAN! Take advantage of one-touch recording from videotapes to DVD+/-R and RW discs or from DVDs to VHS tapes. A variety of different inputs also let you record from compatible camcorders, external TV tuners or cable boxes.

CONSUMER ALERT: This model does not have a built-in tuner for recording TV programs and will not record copy-protected tapes or discs. unfortunately the tape clamp sensor is broken or worn, or could have dust or dirt obstructing it and they don't have parts for these anymore, the tape clamp sensor is like a tiny white plastic sensor only a few millimeters in size with a red eye inside the edge of the tape carriage, and needs possible cleaning, it could be something as simple as dirt inside the mechanism over the sensors, the Tv will power down when the error occurs not much you can do if a clean or high output air blow of the components don't do the trick. sometimes dirt in the circuit can cause it to do that too, ....im surprised it lasted this long actually they were great for the bedroom, i had one ages ago they are available on ebay for about $100 or under now ...Sorry i couldn't be of more help.......you may get away with disconnecting the white feed ribbon cable that powers the tape cartridge and just use it as a DVD and Tv, that should stop the error.

T.V. shuts off when I try to play a DVD in the built-in player

Try putting in a VCR tape let it load and hit stop. If the set stays on it's the VCR deck causing the problem. It will be either be bad sensors or LED or possibly the mode switch. Let me know if this helps.

What you're describing is common when the center LED has failed / gone out. If you're really good at taking a unit like this apart and putting it back together - and not too bad with a solder stick you could attempt this one yourself... It is a pretty intensive repair but not difficult for a good shop just time consuming. The part isn't too expensive either, just an infared LED... In fact, we've run a bit short on stock once in awhile and bought one of the off the shelf versions from Radio Shack which worked just fine. Good Luck Bill
