Question about Onkyo TX-NR900 7.1 Channels Receiver

1 Answer

Hi, My onkyo txnr900 is a refurbished unit and was good for a while, then I started having problems with dobly digital encoding or something (voices very quiet but ambiance is very loud). Then not long after, the unit will turn on and opperate for certain periods of time (always different time) then make internal clicking sounds and eventually turn off (standby light is unlit, but can see through the units casing, there are some lights on inside at the rear of the unit. is it a faulty capacitor or something. I just want the unit to power up first and the obviously try and fix the dolby decoding problem. cheers drew

SOURCE: Onkyo TX-SR500 Dolby Digital problem

I just read over the problem you were having with your Onkyo TX-SR500 receiver. It sound like the unit needs to be setup for all five channels.Sence your symptom says the diplay shows Dolby D3/2.1. According to the owners manual with the remote control look for speaker setup whin the button is pressed the current speaker setup will be shown in the display. Press the preset/adjustment<> to change the current setting to five speakers. the listening mode will automatically change according to the number of channels you selected. Hope this helps. SOURCE: I have an Onkyo tx-sv434

Could you please confirm you have your system set to Speakers A and that the Surround Mode is set to Dolby Pro Logic?

Have you set the individual speaker volumes during the Test Mode?

Finally could you also please confirm the Model No for your DVR to confirm that this is giving the Dolby Pro Logic Output you require.

Since it's under warranty there's not a lot you can do. Otherwise if you go inside you will void the warranty.

Your best bet is to play the recordings through the headphone connector to a pc audio line-in connector and capture the audio using something like Audacity. Then output them using audacity to mp3 to play on your mp3 player.

These units are notorious for their failing USB feature.

This sounds like a decoder problem rather than a problem with the amplifier section. These units have a test mode, I believe, that sends white noise to each speaker. If that test has correct volume and balance, then the problem is in the digital decoding and processing. The surround processing board probably has a problem and will need to be replaced. Please update this with the results of the white noise test.

No audio from pc connected using hdmi

Are you not getting audio to the television speakers and the onkyo reciever speakers when connected HDMI thru the reciever or just the television. If it is just thru the television then it is because the reciever is grabbing the HDMI audio signal and converting it so it does not reach the TV. If it is both then try changing the HDMI signal output from PCM to DOLBY DIGITAL on the computer. Your reciever may not be able to process the PCM signal of the computer. Does the reciever show a PCM or DOBLY DIGITAL display when HDMI is hooked up to it?

Onkyo digital reciever has poping noise when in dolby sound

I have the same reciever, and had the same problem.  Contact Onkyo, this is a known issue where defective DSP chips were used and manifest problems with a popping / clicking sound when using surround settings.  These receivers also have a Dolby Digital input issue that can cause audio dropouts when watching cable or SAT broadcasts that encode DD using a 'newer' broadcast encoding methods.  Onkyo is covering the cost of that repair for me now, even though the receiver is 5 years old now....

I have the same problem on a refurbished unit I bought 2 years ago. I read at the time that this is a common problem and you just need to send to an Onkyo service center. There are links on the Onkyo or ShopOnkyo website.

Lousy design I guess.

True HD can only work with HDMI interface and is only available on some newer HD DVDs. Check the DVD to see if the True HD encoding is available.

This is not an IR problem. Could be just loose connectors and dry joints. You'll need to open the unit and visual inspection of the PCB and connector for abnormality.

Good luck.

Sony STR-DE545 5.1 Channels Receiver

It sounds like you have unit in setup mode. The "L C R" is Left, Center, Right. You can set balance and volume levels of each with this mode.
Use remote to select 5.1 dolby surround to get unit out of 2/1 "stereo"
