There might be a problem during the installation of norton. What you can try to do is to perform a system restore and bring back the computer to an earlier date before you install norton or befor you get the problem. Here are the steps on how to do it:

  1. restart the computer
  2. press F8 key repeatedly when you see the VAIO logo until you get the screen that says Advanced boot option
  3. use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight safemode then press enter
  4. when it loads to safemode, go to start menu
  5. go to all programs
  6. click accessories
  7. click system tools the select system restore
  8. on the system restore window, click next
  9. in choose a different restore point, you will see list of dates or calendar where you can pick a date that you want to use in restoring back the computer settings.
  10. click on the next button again
  11. click finish
the computer will start restoring the settings back to the selected date which may take for a few mins(2mins to 10mins usually). system restore does not delete any personal files/documents. It only undo software applications, updates and settings.

Your Sony Vaio laptop comes with a restore section pre-installed that allows you to revert the operating system's settings to an earlier date.

The restore feature is useful if your Sony Vaio has been infected with a virus or some of your hardware is no longer working properly.

If you don't want to search through all of your various settings and registry values to locate the source of the problem, an easier solution is to simply load a restore point.

Close any programs that are currently running.
Open the "Start" menu and click "All Programs."

Select "VAIO Recovery Wizard." Click "Next."
Navigate to "Media and Recovery Options" and click "Proceed with System Recovery."

Select "Next."
Click "Recovery Options," and then choose "Custom Recovery."

Click "Next," and then select "Windows System Restore."
Click "Next" and then "OK."

Click the left and right arrow buttons above the calendar to navigate to a restore point you want to load.
Click the specific restore date you want to use for your Sony Vaio laptop.

Click "Next," and then click "Confirm Restore Point Selection."

Locked up on restart... How do I solve this mess????

Sony's Vaio line of laptop and desktop computers ship with the latest version of Windows installed. Even the best designed Vaio computer can sometimes malfunction, occasionally in connection with an error in Windows. Boot your Vaio computer in Windows' "Safe Mode" to disable potential problem-causing drivers and programs to help you troubleshoot and fix your Sony computer.

Windows XP Press the power button on the Sony Vaio computer, typically found in the top right corner of the laptop's keyboard panel or on the desktop's tower. If your computer is already on, press "Start" in the lower left corner of Windows XP and press "Turn off computer." A new window will appear. Press the green "Restart" icon. Hold down the F8 key on your Sony Vaio's keyboard as soon as your computer's screen goes dark. A new window, labeled "Windows Advanced Options," will appear. Choose one of the Safe Mode options listed. "Safe Mode" loads the minimal amount of drivers, while "Safe Mode with Networking" also loads your networking preferences. Press "OK." b> Windows 7 Press the Sony Vaio computer's power button if it's off, or restart the computer. Click "Start" in the lower left corner of Windows 7 and choose "Shut Down." A new window will appear. Push "Restart." Press and hold your computer's F8 key. A menu called "Advanced Boot Options" will launch on the screen once the restarting process is complete. Choose "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking" and press "OK."
You could select the option start at last known configuration that worked this will tell you if and what file has been corrupted or missing then you will know if its a hardware issue You might use the system restore to restore your system to an earlier time click start all programs If it is a hardware issue the system restore might not work Restart your computer repeatedly tapping the f8 key to enter safe mode while the screen is black once in safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you to attempt to repair your computer. Try this:

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to restore your Vaio PC to it's factory settings. In other words how to restore your computer to it's original settings (in the exact state you bought it).
For that you have to:
1. Back-up all your data. Restoring to factory setting means to erase all data and reinstall Windows, drivers and preinstalled applications. If you have a single drive (C:) you have to backup your data to external drive or disks.
2. Start VAIO Recovery Center. Click on Start button and then click on All Programs. From the program list select "VAIO Recovery Center".
