Hello,I have a briggs 13.5hp I/C ohv single cylinder engine I just rebuilt.when I go to start it up I have to choke it to get it to start.while its running it back fires threw the exhaust and carb. Also the govener hunts. If I choke it half way it will idle high and run without backfire or hunting.I'v tried adjusting the valves from .004 to .006 and cleaned and inspected the carb, adjusted the govener and inspected spark plug gap.I need help. Can someone help me?

Try increasing the idol by turning the idle screw up.If that doesn't work the carburetor may need to be reset properly or it might need an overhaul.

Smoking and loosing power

Blue smoke means engine worn or too much oil in sump.
Black smoke is caused by too much fuel being sucked into carburettor.
This can be caused by a dirty air filter, choke being left on after engine is started or fault in choke system if automatic choke fitted.

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.
