Set will not operate?

I was watching the set when a slight but audible pop was heard, then the set went off. I tried several times to restart to no avail via the remote and the on-off button on the set. I then removed the back and uplugged the set. I noticed that after a brief time when the set was plugged back a group of green LED's came on briefly followed by another then they all went back off. This also appeared when a possible audio sound was heard. The set is a Hitachi Model # 55UX58B purchased in April of 2000.

You will need to check a few things. The way the LED's come on and go off tell what is wrong with set. But you can check off the bat, first E996,E994,I908, Q026, Q777, D703,R732,D722

Your equipment is burned by an electricity discharge.. there is a tiny posibility that there is some sort of fuse there that you can change so it works.
other than that, if you want to fix it, you will need to take pictures so we could see what has been busted...

this sounds like a similar problem that Samsungs have .. i went on the internet researching similar problems all pointing to the same problem. It is the capacitors on the power circuit board. there is a video tutorial on you tube on how to fix the problem ... albeit on a samsung, but you will get the idea . . I repaired mine myself and it works like new again. . good luck and here's the you tube link to the first video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm51C_RDIZE

Sounds like it could be a problem with high voltage stages. Definitely a job for a TV technician as it is dangerous try to repair it yourself.

You need to replace the lamp in this set. The "pop" you heard was the lamp popping.
