I am replacing ignition switch in my 95 chevy suburban and need to know if there are any special instructions or (tricks) to doing this. A friend told me it was difficult, but it looks fairly simple. thanks

Check the electrical connector. If it is part melted, the wires may be shorting. Splice in a new connector.
If not it, you may need a voltmeter to check voltages of wires into switch.
is that the key that has a black square with two electrical contacts, one on each side of the black little square?
the dealer that sold the key should have known what number the previous key was, and ordered accordingly, and such dealer SHOULD have an electronic tool called TECH IV, (better if TECH V).

you need haynes repair manual for 1993 suburban it has photos and information you need to help you replace ignition switch.i am mechanic i use haynes,chiltons and gm manuals.if you are a home mechanic do it your self you need haynes repair manual it has step by step instructions to remove the steering wheel and remove lower steering column reason i say need haynes repair because your steering wheel has a air bag in it you need to see how to remove air bag in steering wheel you need to read through the entire ignition switch removal procedure if you are going to replace ignition switch with keylock cylinder you will also need steering wheel puller. you need a tool compress lock plate to remove lock plate retaining ring from steering shaft in order to get to the ignition switch in the steering column below turn signal switch.

Ignition elec switch. Disconnect battery. 2. remove trimpanel from lower leftside of instrument panel. remove screw retaining lower steering column and remove cove. 3. remove slotted screws on both side of switch. 4. relase tabs and remove switch from elec harnass and remove sealer.. note: before mating new ignition elec switch check that switch is in correct position. seal screws again.
Ignition lock cylinder replacing. 1. insert master key and turn 60 deg to radio position. 2. inset piece of stiff wire into opening in lock cylinder and pull cylinder out. (Note early models up to 10/95 turn lock cylinder back 12 deg to release)
Yes you do require a special tool to remove them. You could drill out the screws and that would remove the ignition swith but you would still need a tool to put the new one on.
