I believe you can. There is no tricks. Just follow the wires, and unscrew the thing that's holding the switch.
But get the exact replacement part..

Why would the head light switch keep burning out and smoking when i put a new one in on my 95 chevy suburban?

Check the electrical connector. If it is part melted, the wires may be shorting. Splice in a new connector.
If not it, you may need a voltmeter to check voltages of wires into switch.

is that the key that has a black square with two electrical contacts, one on each side of the black little square?
the dealer that sold the key should have known what number the previous key was, and ordered accordingly, and such dealer SHOULD have an electronic tool called TECH IV, (better if TECH V).

95 Escort Ignition Switch

Yes you do require a special tool to remove them. You could drill out the screws and that would remove the ignition swith but you would still need a tool to put the new one on.
