Question about Akai PT5598HD 55" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Akai PT5598HD My Akai PT5598HD is almost 4 years old. From day one the sound has gone in and out, but I didn't really pay that much attention to it. I thought that maybe it was the cable. Well, the set went out about three weeks ago. There's no picture or sound, just a blinking red timer light. I replaced the main accy deflector pcb, but it still did the same thing. Do you have any suggestions?

My akai screen got wet from the rain what do i do

If you haven't already powered it up, turn it upside-down to disperse and standing water that may be in the set, and then let it stand for 3-4 days to completely dry out BEFORE even plugging it in. Water doesn't hurt electronics by itself, it's the electrolysis that occurs when electronics are energized while wet that causes damage.

WOn't turn On

I talked to an Akai certified tech who told me the problem is a bad convergence module. The part alone is $400. Fortunately, I purchased mine from Costco 3 years ago. Costco has a 100% guarantee policy that I was not aware of. I called them asking if I had an extended warrenty and they gave me the full purchase price as a refund ! If any Costco purchasers are experiencing this problem and you purchased the TV prior to March 2007 (when Costco changed their policy), you may be able to take it back and get the full amount you paid for it. I turned around and purchased a new, larger Panasonic for under $150 more. It has a 5 year warrenty.

The Akai service number (to reach a certified repair place) is 1-800-726-4405. The Akai people are very good and can direct you to options. For those near Pittsburgh PA, Contact Rosewood Audio in New Castle 724 654-3023.

Akai PT5598HD 55 in. Rear Projection

Something like this Id have someone who knows there way around electronics, a qualified tech or someone you trust really well :-) Does the crackling affect the TV picture at all ? My first guess would be dust and or dampness on the audio components. Sometimes this can conduct electricity across small pc chips and reak all sorts of havoc. I had an old Tomas electric organ once, and it actually caught fire because two speaker wires were rubbing together and eventually wore thru the insulation and shorted out, but it was also making alot of crackling and static noises. Try raising and lowering the volume low to high and high to low and see if the crackling noises gets worse. Some audio amplifiers put out quite a bit of power, so I wouldnt trust leaving the TV on without a fire extinguisher handy.

No Picture

Hear say has it that Toshiba who made alot of the internal parts for this model can offer more help than Akai.
As for the other problems... first Id try leaving the TV unplugged for a day or so. This is a great TV, picked mine up for 400 from my boss who baught it a few years back for 1400 from Sams Club. If I hear a solution I'll be sure to come back here and post it.

Picture moved up and to the right

I know this is an old post, but it was never replied to and I just joined the site. Does the image only show the shift when on the DVD input? It is possible that the DVD player is the one shifting the image and not the TV. Try another device on that input and see if it goes away. Kenneth

1 thick Vertical line and many small diagnaol lines across screen ? I tried to reset TV a number of times and tried the Perfect Focus with no help. Akai's only service center in manhattan DO NOT service...

Are you kidding/?? Customer service told you to find your own repair shop.? Its time to sit down and write a letter to the main headqaurters that would be listed in your owners manual . MAN their not suppose to say stuff like that to customers. I would address it attention to the president of Akai and send a copy to the BBB and the consumer affairs as a company is suppose to provide parts and service for there products for at least three to five years ., It used to be seven! You didnt say how this happened or if there was sound or any video on the screen. I might be able to lead you thru some diagnosie,BUT these sets do not have any user serviceable parts inside and can hold several differant hi voltages in the set ,even if its unplugged or off . Please if you can send a picture of your problem But as i said if your not a tech its very dangerous to tinker with these set! Good Luck

The tv won't come on

Try to unplug the set overnight to see if the Microprocessorr got a glitch. Try it the next day. If that didnt work i would say then your gonna need a pro as I've said before these sets have no user servicable parts inside so its not like the good old days where you take out a bunch of tubes and check them. Todays sets are all solid state electronic componets so you really have to know your electronics before you should attempt to repair a set these days as you could get a really big shock even if its unplugged. Sorry Good Luck
