Hi,

Is the blue streak visible on all inputs and in the menu and on screen display? When you power off the set, the screen will stay lit for 5 - 10 seconds with no picture. Can you see the blue streak when you turn off the set?

If Yes would be the Answer , then :-

That pretty much confirms my diagnosis. Your optical block has a damaged blue panel. The light in your set is routed through 3 colored LCD panels (red green and blue) and the blue panel has been damaged. There are two ways to proceed. The first is to buy a new block.

The cheaper way is to have your block repaired. You can have your block repaired for about $300. You can learn about that by clicking HERE
You can attempt to remove the block yourself for service, but I must tell you this is one of the worst sets from which to remove an optical block. If you can find a technician to remove and reinstall the block, I would expect to pay $300 - $400 in labor to have this done.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

I have a blue streak on the left side of my Hitachi ultravision digital TV. This streak is not solid but hazy and irregular in size.

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

My JVC projection television AV-48WP30 has green and red streaks at the top with one long blue streak going across the screen. I tried everything that I could to fix it by the tv and remote and it still...

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Gray cloudy spot in center of photos;distorted light streaks

Time for another. Sell yours to a repairman in an ebay auction, keeping your accessories, and buy a working used on without accessories cheap.

Or this may be a good time to either buy another TZ3 refurb w/warranty(90 days I think) or a new one one Ebay. They are very reasonable since being replaced with the newer TZ5.

Is my bulb going bad!!!!

Without seeing your Tv it is hard to say what is really going on.

The cloudy picture sounds like one of your "bulbs" needs to have it's fluid changed, not "bulb" replacement.

Rain bowing normally means convergence adjustment or circuit repair is needed.

Blue streaks across picture

Can you describe in a little more detail what the symptoms are? Are the streaks thin lines or are they large thick swashes of Blue? Is yur video still visible? Sounds like it may be the blue convergence amps or the resistor tied into the amps. is there anyway you can post a picture of your screen distortion?

PT-47WX, Blue streaks across the screen?

It is not a bulb. It is a picture tube. If there are thin blue lines across the entire screen, not just the edges, and the picture itself looks too blue, it means that the blue picture tube is being driven too hard. This could be because the blue screen voltage is too high, the boost voltage on the blue picture tube is too low, or the video output is leaky or shorted. If the picture has what looks like blue arcs and double images on one or more sides of the picture, it means that one of your convergence IC's has burned out and needs to be replaced. These are things that should be tested and serviced by a qualified tech, so allow an experienced tech to handle it for you.
