    Do these instructions not work?
Check the estimated ink levels by performing the following steps:

    1. In the HP Director software, click Settings , click Print Settings , and then click Printer Toolbox .

    2. In the Printer Toolbox, select the Estimated Ink Level tab. If one or more of the colors of ink are low or empty, replace the cartridge.

      NOTE:
The ink levels indicated are "estimated" levels and are calibrated to the HP 56 and 57 cartridges. The actual ink left in the ink cartridge may be less.

This may be the reason it does not work.

How can i check which ink are out

Your printer should have come with a disk. This disk would have installed the necessary program that runs printing jobs, as well as keeps track of the ink level. Locate this program on your computer (may be under All Programs, Accessories under the Start Menu).
If not, Go into the Control Panel: (see below)
carsandcomps_3.jpg

Above, you see "Hardware and Sound"; and below that shows "View Devices and Printers. Click on this. It will then bring you into the below dialogue box, of which shows any and all printers currently installed and which are being used. (see below)

carsandcomps_4.jpg

Once you have located your printer here - (name etc). Go into your Start Menu: In the Search Box at the bottom type "programs"; look for the words "show which programs are installed on your computer", should be the fourth in the list. Below is what the list will look like. Find your printer here to ensure it's installed.

carsandcomps_5.jpg

Once you have determined it's installed, you need to locate the printer program in your file system. Once you retrieve this, click it to open it. The program should allow you to view the ink levels. With most printers, when ink is low it will automatically open a dialogue box showing the ink levels for each cartridge. If you're printer is not equipped with this feature, then the only way to know if any need changed is when printing a document, and any color is not present.
I apologize for such a long response, as I wanted you to know how to access these files. If you are printing, and all colors appear to be present, without fading, or "blotchy" spots, then your cartridges are still good. You should be able to do a print test (calibration or alignment test) to determine this as well.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

How to reset the ink level of my hp officejet 6500

Checking ink levelsUse one of the following methods to check the ink levels. Method one: Check the ink levels from the HP All-in-One The ink level is displayed on the main screen of the control panel display. Locate the two icons that represent the print cartridges. The icon on the left is for the color cartridge and the icon on the right is for the black cartridge.
  • The exclamation mark (! ) symbol indicates a low ink level.
  • The question mark (? ) symbol indicates the product cannot determine the status of the print cartridge. This might be because the cartridge is refilled.

Epson DX4850 problem getting ink levels to highlight using Vista

Checking the level of ink in an Epson printer can be done without having to remove the ink cartridges. This method works on black and white as well as color inkjet printers. Checking the level of ink can help you plan ahead when buying new cartridges
Instructions:
  • Install the Epson StatusMonitor software. This program comes on the CD included with the printer. It can also be downloaded from the Epson Web site. or from http://download.cnet.com/Epson-Status-Monitor-2/3000-2116_4-10024738.html
  • Open the Epson StatusMonitor program in any application (such as word processing, spreadsheets or Web browsers) that allows you to print. Click on the "File" menu tab in the control bar of the application
  • Select print or page setup from the "File" menu. A dialog box will open. In that box, click on the "StatusMonitor" icon, which will open the "Epson StatusMonitor" dialog box. Also, you can click on the "Utility" icon and then the "Epson StatusMonitor" button from the "Utility" dialog box.
  • Click on the "Update" button to update the display (if you do not think these levels are accurate) when the "Epson StatusMonitor" dialog box displays the relative ink levels for each cartridge in the printer.
  • Go back to the "Print" dialog box to change the way that the StatusMonitor utility monitors your printer and ink levels. Click on the "Utility" button again.
  • Click on the "Configuration" button in the "Utility" dialog box. The open "Configuration" dialog box will let you adjust settings such as ink level warnings and ink level monitoring before each printing.

Can't find tool box to check ink level - HP 6310 using Vista 2007

doesnt matter most printers have a feature of their own to check ink levels.
press the setup button on the printer and scroll down(with the arrow buttons) till you get tools press ok and now scroll through until you get ink level and select it by pressing the ok button, walla you should have your ink levels in front of you.

Now about the hp solution centre/hp director icon on your desktop (if you have installed the software).
Click on settings and click on printer toolbox and now check your estimated ink levels it will show the ink levels of the printer cartridges.

How do you check ink levels

Introduction This describes how to check the estimated ink level in the cartridge. NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low ink levels, keep a replacement ink cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. Ink cartridges do not need to be replaced until print quality becomes unacceptable. Checking ink levels Perform the following steps to check the estimated ink levels: NOTE: If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured print cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another printer, the ink level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable.
  1. Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:
    • Click Start and select HP Solution Center . Select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox .
    • In your printing application, click File , click Print , and click Properties . Click the Services tab, then the Service This Device icon.
  2. The Printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A cartridge may be running out of ink even if the graphic shows ink remaining (see the note at the start of this section). Lines or streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink. Figure 1: Estimated ink levels
