Question about Sony STR-DE475 Receiver

Sony STR-DE475 - Sound levels dropping

Every time I turn on the receiver to watch cable TV or a DVD, the sound starts out at a high level and then about 5 minutes later, the sound level drops and I have to crank up the remote to get the sound to the right level.
And lately, the sound "pops" back up to full sound so I have to run and lower the volume with the remote.

I also have a problem with DVDs. Very often, the level of speaking in the film is much lower than music, effects, etc. which can get quite loud. I'm constantly adjusting the sound every time there is a quiet talking scene. Any suggestions? Thank you!

When did this start? Did it ever work right?

How's the sound from your TV speakers by itself and from DVD? The same? Problem's in the TV.

If it's just the receiver doing it from both sources that's where we start.

Check the settings for dynamic range (ratio of loud sounds to soft sounds) in both your receiver and your cable TV tuner. Many devices have a setting sometimes called "MidNight Mode" to be used in the event you're listening while someone else might be sleeping or otherwise would be disturbed by the TV volume.

The assumption is that you will turn the TV down but that normally means you would lose the quiet programming in the background nosie of your home. Through the magic of dynamic compression the quiter sounds are raised to audibility while loud things like explosions and fanfares will be limited in volume. Depending on the design and whatever the broadcaster is doing to the sound themselves this could be anywhere from pleasingly effective to aggravatingly inconsistent with odd variations in the levels.

Hope this helps.

Getting the best out of my Sony STR DE-475

Yes, it would downgrade.

Simply run an HDMI cable to the LCD from the DVD player. Now, use the digital audio output of the DVD player to run to the receiver. I know the Sony has an optical input which i recommend over the coaxial input as the optical cable doesnt waste any energy as a medium transferring sound since its only light.

I had this problem last night.

To solve it, you can reset the amp by:

1) Put the receiver on stand-by
2) Hold down "MODE" button and press on button
3) "S.F. CLR" appears in the display and surround is back on.

Good luck

I want to set up my surround sound i need to know what the cable looks like for digital in and video in looks like is it a fiber optic

That is called a TOSLink cable, it is indeed fiber optic. It is for digital audio only, video is carried by HDMI (which also carries digital audio), component video cables, S-video cable, coaxial cable, or RCA jacks.

For your surround sound from a DVD player, connect your digital audio from the DVD to the receiver's input, then the video out from the DVD to the receiver's input. Now the video out from the receiver goes to the TV and the surround sound should now be coming through your speakers. Post again in this thread if you need more help or explanation.
