Best Practices To Avoid Notebook Overheating
To avoid chances of laptop overheating, please follow these practices:
Clean the ventilation openings of your laptop at regular intervals with compressed air.
Always place your laptop on a flat, hard surface like a table etc. Don't place your laptop on blankets or other soft surfaces that can block the fans and air vents on the bottom of the laptop.
Never put the laptop in a restricted space where heat can build up and cause issues.
Install monitoring applications on the laptop that enables you to track the temperatures of processors, hard drives and other system components.
Regulate and optimize the power settings suitably so that the heat generating parts – such as the LCD and storage disc drives – power down if they are not used for a period of time.
If find necessary, you should use a laptop cooling device or a stand for raising your laptop to minimize the chances of heating.
If you are facing overheating issues and the laptop is currently covered under warranty from the manufacturer, report the problems so that the issue can be resolved.

I have an Acer Aspire 5735. I use it everyday for my work, however over the last few months it has started to turn itself off. The fan starts to hum loudly for a few seconds and then it shuts down. I have...

The way you describe the problem, with the fan getting noticeably louder then shutting the computer down entirely, sounds like an overheating issue; the fan spins up to top speed to try and cool the system down, fails to do so, and the machine shuts itself down as a safety precaution.

Propping it up might have provided it with a bit more airflow, which may be why you experience the shut downs a little less frequently. I would invest in a can of compressed air, which can be found at any office supply store, and blow out the exhaust vents on your laptop. If you've never cleaned your machine before, dust and other debris that accumulates in the vents and around the fan have probably built up enough to restrict air flow.

My acer aspire 5315 shuts off suddenly and won't restart till it wants to. I replaced the battery, no difference....what's wrong?

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced

Hi,

The reason for the sudden shut down of your computer is because of overheating of the 'case', where the CPU is mounted. Overheating can be due to dust accumulation on the heat sink, which prevents dissipation of heat. The possible solution to combat overheating issue is to keep the laptop dust free by cleaning out debris at the vents frequently. Note that a laptop has a much smaller cooling area in comparison with desktops and hence laptops tend to accumulate dust a lot quicker than desktops. This is because all the dust/debris, in the case of laptops, accumulate in the cooling fins.

Hi my laptop just shuts down after about 15mins

This would be the fan overheating,
their is only one way to fix this and that would be to take it apart and clean the fan out , if you dont want to do that then take it to a computer shop they should be able to do this

Blank screen. Won't turn on.

You could have an overheating problem. The CPU shutsdown when it overheats and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. Check the CPU fan and heatsink assembly. The fan may have stopped spinning or spins slowly and the heatsink is clogged with dust.
Remove the dust and replace the fan if it is faulty.
