Try to visit the dell or cd/dvd manufacturer website and download the proper driver for the model of the cd-rw/dvd-rom drive.

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
make sure that the cd rom is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the cd drive including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd rom then plug them back in or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
Click start control panel administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you will have options to update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall
if your computer came with a motherboard disc the sound drivers could be on it

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer

I have had this for a long time, but i want to reinstall the driver because its not accepting dvds anymore

Hi,

The MS-8148 is a CD-ROM drive, it can only read CDs and not DVDs.

On a DVD the information is packed much more tightly and needs a different kind of laser to read it. This is why a CD-ROM drive cannot read a DVD disc.

Please rate my answer if this helps.

Regards,

Chris

My dvd rom are not read the vcd's and dvd's why?

mojahidulisi,

You could have a dirty laser lense. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4119308-clean_lense_cd_or_dvd_player which will walk you through the process.

If this does not solve your problem I would try reinstalling the driver for the CD ROM. The driver should be on the disks which came with the computer. The process is basically insert the disc and follow the instructions to reinstall the driver for the CD ROM. This may require a restart of the computer.

In the unfortunate case where neither of the two suggestions work, you will have to install a new CD ROM. They are not that expensive anymore. In fact you may want to upgrade to a DVD/CD burner. There are many sites to get them from. I like to use http://www.newegg.com . They are easy to work with, have good prices and an excellent return policy.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the generous rating!!

Cannot read CDs, can read DVDs

If it would have been a soft problem it wouldn't have worked at all, the driver is for the unit, not just for a function. Most likely it's a HW problem: either the laser died or the lens is dirty - try cleaning it.
Btw if your unit can't read cd's how those morons at the shop expect that you could reinstall (or repair) your Windows?
Test your unit your self: take it out, put it in another laptop (or in an external case and attach it to another pc and check there. If it's dead then replace it with a new one - preferably a dvd-writer of any mark.

Take the Cd drive out and take off the top. Look inside for a tiny glass cover. Looks like a small light bulb. Clean the fine layer of dust off this glass and you just might be back in business. keever
