Sounds like the "hub" for the turntable is worn. either that or the actual turntable motor. also insure the "plate" has a ring under it with wheels. sometimes I find those missing which in turn put far too much loud on the hub & motor, hence wearing them out pre-maturely.

you should be able to pull the hub out from inside the oven, if not. remove the filters below and if you twist just right you should see a small round device mounted with two tiny philips head screws, that's the turntable motor. It's usually the "hub" that wears though, so it's likely an easy fix. The most difficult part may be finding the new replacement part itself.

hope that helps,

good luck

My microwave makes a grinding noise when running and the turntable doesn't work.

Possible there is friction within the drive , the shaft or the motor. You can remove and RESET the drive. Remove the motor , MANUALLY check the motion of the mechanism which will confirm the case. You c an reset using a bit of lubrication.

Burning smell and loud grinding noise

If that grinding noise sounds a little like gargling into a coffee cup, that's a defective magnetron.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Unit makes a lot of noise when cooking.

The exhaust fan may be loose, {check mounts} also, the turnable motor that rotates the plate often gets noisey before seizing, {remove plate to see if noise goes away} and finally the magnetron gets very loud near end of life.

I have an Oster 1.2 cu. ft counter top microwave model OM1201E0VG. I purchased this model about a month ago. Every time we run it there is a grinding noise as the turn table rotates. I have checked...

There is still factory warranty on this and most stores wold even take it back if there is a problem. Please don't try and repair something that can be fixed under warranty or they will void the warranty. My advice is to put it all back to gether and then take it to the store you purchased it from and demand an exchange. They most likely will return it no questions asked if it is that new.

I have a JES1142 which I purchased only one month ago. The turning plate rotates both clockwise and counter clockwise. When it rotates counterclockwise it makes a grinding sound. Why does it rotate bot...

It's normal for the motor to turn both ways, that's because of how the motor is made. As for the grinding noise, there's no reason the motor itself would make more noise turning one direction than in the other. The noise might be coming from the roller ring under the glass turntable. One of its wheels might be binding when it tries to turn counterclockwise.

Here's a test. Take the glass tray and roller ring out of the oven. Put a microwave-safe container with a cup or so of water in the oven and start it. Stop the oven and start it again, and the motor should turn the other way. If not, repeat this until you've seen the plastic coupling turn both directions. Note whether you still hear the noise as the motor turns each way. If you do, then there is something wrong with the motor and it should be replaced. If not, the noise is coming from the roller.

In either case, if the oven is truly only a month old it's still under warranty. Since you are concerned about the noise and are worried that the oven is defective, contact the store where you purchased it and see if they will exchange it or take it in for service. If the store can't help you, refer to the owner's manual for the service procedure to follow.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya!

Hi, I have a GE JVM1440 & the plate won't spin

This is commonly caused by a turntable motor that has worn out and needs replaced. The following link explains how to access and replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3555716-replacing_a_turntable_motor_on_a_microwa

If the model number is correct, the part number is WB26X10038. You may also consider replacing the turn table shaft (coupler), part number WB06X10138. You can purchase replacement parts at the following websites: searspartsdirect.com pcappliancerepair.com appliancepartspros.com repairclinic.com The first three sites listed offer helpful exploded view diagrams to assist you in parts location/identification. If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

My turntable stopped rotating on my GEJVM1490 for no reason. everything else works fine, any suggestions?

There is a small motor underneath the microwave which turns the plate or turntable around.
If this is faulty then you will need a service agent to repair it.

Loud humming/no heating

Word has it that many of these models have a defect which causes the microwave energy to be reflected back to the magnetron, causing damage to the magnetron, and eventually damaging the high-voltage diode too. Also, the fuse or the magnetron theral cutout / thermostat can eventually blow, too. There is a replacement magnetron and stirrer kit available. I would definitely call the GE Answer Center at 800-626-2005 about this. It's not considered a recall, but a "campaign". They may pick up part of the cost. It's not cheap.
