Hello Aaron, It sounds as though the piston rings in the compressor pump are not seated in the cylinder. Could they be worn out from use?

The motor runs continuously and the pressure is low. What are the possible causes for this?

You haven't given any model number information, but typically on any air compressor if it won't build pressure, either you have a leak in your piping, tank, hose or the compressor cannot move the required cfm of air. Could be a valve problem or piston, relief valve? Do you hear any air leaking. There are som many different models from cheap throw away compressors to thousands of dollar models. HArd to say without more information

Nail Gun how to

One of the factors used to designate compressor power is motor horsepower. However, this isn't the best indicator. You really need to know the amount of air the compressor can deliver at a specific pressure. The rate at which a compressor can deliver a volume of air is noted in cubic feet per minute (cfm). Because atmospheric pressure plays a role in how fast air moves into the cylinder, cfm will vary with atmospheric pressure. It also varies with the temperature and humidity of the air. To set an even playing field, makers calculate standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) as cfm at sea level with 68 degrees F air at 36% relative humidity. Scfm ratings are given at a specific pressure–3.0 scfm at 90 psi, for example. If you reduce pressure, scfm goes up, and vice versa. You also may run across a rating called displacement cfm. This figure is the product of cylinder displacement and motor rpm. In comparison with scfm, it provides an index of compressor pump efficiency. The cfm and psi ratings are important because they indicate the tools that a particular compressor can drive. When choosing a compressor, make sure it can supply the amount of air and the pressure that your tools need.

Portable Air Compressor Comparison

Portable air compressors give flexibility to the job both inside and outside the working environment. They're powered by electric, gasoline or diesel engine. A larger portable air compressor often has its own carrying trailer with wheels and handles. You buy a compressor based on its horsepower, pounds per square inch (PSI) and cubic feet per minute (CFM). Choose a portable air compressor to make work quicker and easier. Figure the amount of power you need based on the type of job and air tools used. Know the cubic feet per minute (CFM), such as 5 CFM for small household tools and 10 CFM or more for wrenches or sanders. All air tools have these ratings. Select a gas- or electric-powered engine. Gas gives a higher reliability for frequent use and portability, but consider electric for enclosed areas for its lack of fumes. Pick an air tank based on amount of use time and tools. Large tanks are best for longer use with sanders or grinders and smaller tanks for less time, like wrenches and air hammers. Consider the pump type you need: belt for heavy use or direct-drive for light home use. The quieter belt-drive pump needs periodic oil changes. Buy an inexpensive, small electric portable air compressor for small jobs. These typically operate from a 12-volt power outlet and inflate a 14-inch tire in a few minutes. Get a 150 PSI, 120 volt motor pancake-type air compressor for home use. These light-use models typically carry two air couplers, allowing hook up of two air tools and adequate 25 feet or more air hose. Obtain a larger PSI portable air compressor for bigger jobs, like nailing, with longer continuous use capabilities.
