Whirpool double oven shutdown during self cleaning operation and now is completely dead and the top oven door will not open. I have checked the circuit breaker and it is in the closed position and power is coming through the breaker. Any suggestions as to the cause of this problem?

Ran the self-clean cycle, it went through completely, then I came back to see how it was. The display was blank, and I thought it was just me. I checked the breakers, and nothing. Any idea as to what this is? I checked some other places and I think it might be the thermal fuse thing, but I don't know. I'd rather have a clue before I call service......Thanks in advance....now I wish I'd left it dirty!

I had three separate problems with my whirlpool double oven. First, about after 2 weeks of using my brand new oven, it had an error message. A repairman came to fix it and worked fine. Months later another error message and a repairman came to fix it. He also mentioned not to run the self cleaning frequently because it can cause it to malfunction. He said wait at least 6 months between cleanings. I did so and my oven shut off during a cleaning cycle about 2 hours into the session. My husband tested the thermal fuse and it was not operating so we are suspecting it is the thermal fuse. As I have been reading the comments it seems that I am not alone. I called whirlpool and they are sending a technician out at their cost for labor and service call. I will need to pay for the part. I will see what the problem is this time and if it indeed the thermal fuse.

I had the same problem. Need a ohm meter to check the thermal shut down circuit on the back of the oven and the thermal fuse to the display panel. Need to be carful to shut off the Electric to the oven so as not to zap yourself.

I found the parts I needed at www.appliancepartspros.com

Too bad someone didn't answer this sooner. Caused be poor air circulation in the unit. There is indeed a thermal fuse used in this unit. This problem has been around for a while and no real solution has been found. The closest "fix" is to remove the fuse, turn it around and only hook it down with the screw that faces the panel. The other screw hole is then bent to a 45 degree upward slant. This give the fuse a little breathing room.

When baking my oven door is not locked is it supposed to be?and if so how do we lock it.

The locking of the oven door is a safety feature used only during automatic self cleaning cycle, this is because temperatures during the self clean cycle can reach upwards of 600+ degrees creating a dangerous situation if the door was opened, it will remain locked after the self cleaning cycle is complete until the oven interior temperature is below 100 degrees. So no the door is not normally locked during the bake cycle. Good luck !

There is a non-resettable fuse on the back of the oven that will have to be replaced. The oven will have to be removed from the wall and the back panel removed from the oven to access the fuse.

Dead Whirlpool Double Oven

This happened to us the first time we used the self-cleaning feature. The repairman said we had to replace the whole electronic panel -- but when he put in the new panel it didn't work either. It turned out he just needed to replace the oven shutdown thermal fuse I believe. We finally got up enough courage to try the self-cleaning again and the exact thing happened. The door is locked and the electronic panel is dead again. So when we get it fixed we will never use the self-clean again.

Cleaning cycle failure

Please call KitchenAid/Whirlpool directly and ask to speak to the 'executive management team'
I had this fault for the second time and this time I spoke to the Exec Management team who said they were unaware of this as a common fault. My stove was ‘fixed’ free of charge – the fuse was replaced, again.
Please everyone who has had or is having this problem call again – this problem needs to be fixed, replacing the fuse each time or not using the self clean function is NOT a fix.

Cleaned then Dead

nextwave, looks like you have a safety thermostat (TCO) on the back of the oven. Should have a red and red/white stripe wire going to it. If this opens it will cut the power to the display, part number is 316003606. The hardest part of this gig is pulling the oven out to change the t-stat out. Catriver.

Oven shut down during Self-cleaning

tde, sounds like your thermal fuse (TC0) opened on the back side of the oven. If this opens, it will shut the oven down. This happens alot during self cleaning on built ins. Sometimes I have to re-route the tco to a different area to prevent this from happening. Your part number is 4451442. You will have to pull the oven out far enough to remove the back paneling and replace the fuse....Catriver..post back.
