Bootmgr file missing
The system Post unable to proceed due to a defective Drive.
I corrected that same problem in less than 15 minute.
You are unable to boot, the error message comes up .
Bootmgr file missing ; > press ctrl alt del .

This is what I did ..I enter the BIOS I set the boot order.
(1) 1st Floppy 2nd CD ROM 3rd HDD
(2) I replace the DVD Drive with a new DVD Drive
(3) I put Gos Linux operating CD in the DVD drive
(4) I then boot the system.
(5) All went well, I format and install........

DO NOT ACT until these details are confirmed. I have worked on many dual boot machines in my day -- however I never deleted the boot partition of a dual boot machine. What is the ultimate goal for this machine a single boot windows 2003 server or something else?

Dual boot machines are tricky as Vista was the first operating system on the machine I believe the option to boot the windows 2003 server partition was added to the boot.ini file in the Vista Partition -- assuming Vista maintains that tradition from Windows NT. If you want I could research the reconstruction of boot blocks, etc.

The repair would probably involve at a minimum using a partitioning program on bootable media to flag the Windows 2003 partition as the boot partition. What is required beyond that will require research.

Another option could be to install a third party boot controller such as System Commander which recognised operating systems in existing partitions and enabled them as a boot choices. That might be most viable only if you are considering adding another operating system to the machine to allow system commander to be installed. (similarly the boot.ini entry could be added after installation of a windows nt based operating system too)

A DOS boot disk with system commander on it may allow access to the Windows 2003 system as a work around but who has dos around anymore with an appropriate version of system commander for dos that would recognise windows 2003?

BOOTMGR usually means that is an issue with your OS. Were some files delete?

Bootmgr is missing

Bootmgr is the replacement for NTLDR in Vista and Win 7. NTLDR (NT loader) is the OS component which literally started the operating system in XP/2000. In the past I have had to use recovery console to go in and repair the OS (this is only available on the Windows disc). I would say in this case you will have to do the same, repair the operating system using the Windows disc.

This article is a how-to on fixing this issue, if you up for it:

What you need is bootable DVD/CD for installing or repairing Windows 7 to get missing 'bootmgr' or repair corrupted bootmgr...If there are files corrupt on your CD, you can get new one from shop you have purchased..Maybe just need to clean up your DVD/CD, so your DVD drives can read properly the files installation..

My laptop says bootmgr is missing and i dont know how to fix

First make sure that all usb devices are unplugged and remove all cd's or dvd's or sd cards etc.
If you are running Windows 7 or Vista you can try do a repair by hitting F8 while it boots and then select repair. If this does not work you will need a install disc. If you have Windows XP you will need an install CD to do a repair. I have attached a few links that may help explain in detail. Thanks for using fixya.

Bootmgr missing

Causes of BOOTMGR ErrorsThere are a number of possible causes for BOOTMGR errors, including the most common "BOOTMGR is missing" error message.

The most common reasons for BOOTMGR errors include corrupt and misconfigured files, hard drive and operating system upgrade issues, corrupt hard drive sectors, an outdated BIOS, and damaged or loose IDE cables.

Another reason you might see BOOTMGR errors is if your PC is trying to boot from a hard drive or flash drive that is not properly configured to be booted from. In other words, it's trying to boot from a non-bootable source. This also would apply to media on an optical drive or floppy drive that you're trying to boot from. Fixes for BOOTMGR Errors
  1. Restart the PC. The BOOTMGR error could be a fluke.

  2. Perform a startup repair of Windows. This type of installation should replace any missing or corrupt files, including BOOTMGR. Continue troubleshooting if this does not resolve the issue.

  3. Check your floppy and optical drives for media. Often times, the "BOOTMGR is Missing" error will appear if your PC is trying to boot to a non-bootable floppy disk or CD/DVD.

Note: If you find that this is the cause of your issue and it's happening regularly, you might want to consider changing the boot order in BIOS so the hard drive is listed as the first boot device.

  4. Check the hard drive and other drive settings in BIOS and ensure they are correct. The BIOS configuration tells the computer how to use a drive so incorrect settings can cause problems, including BOOTMGR errors.

Note: There's usually an Auto setting in BIOS for hard disk and optical drive configurations which is usually a safe bet if you're not sure what to do.

  5. Reseat all internal data and power cables. BOOTMGR error messages could be caused by loose or malfunctioning power or controller cables.

Try replacing the PATA or SATA cable if you suspect it might be faulty.

  6. Update your motherboard's BIOS. An outdated BIOS version can sometimes cause the "BOOTMGR is Missing" error.

  7. Perform a clean installation of Windows. This type of installation will completely remove Windows from your PC and install it again from scratch. While this will almost certainly resolve any BOOTMGR errors, it's a time consuming process due to the fact that all of your data must be backed up and then later restored.

If you can't gain access to your files to back them up, understand that you will lose them all if you continue with a clean installation of Windows.

  8. Replace the hard drive and then perform a new installation of Windows. If all else has failed, including the clean installation from the last step, you're most likely facing a hardware issue with your hard drive.
BOOTMGR Errors Apply To BOOTMGR issues apply to Windows 7 and Windows Vista operating systems only. Windows XP does not utilize BOOTMGR. The equivalent function in Windows XP is NTLDR

Whish you the best luck.

Boot mgr is missing

Boot Manager is missing If the boot partition no longer can be found, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information
More Info MS KB 919529 More Info MS KB 927391 Check points for fixing missing boot-manager: Check that your boot device is configured properly Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". Boot Manager is compressed If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart OR maybe try this first. Check points for fixing compressed boot-manager: Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". If the above doesn't solve the problem then boot into WinRE again, but when selecting the Vista-installation, then press "Load Drivers" (Instead of "Next") and use the mini Windows Explorer to right-click the boot-drive and deselect "Compress this Drive" and choose Apply to sub-folders and files. If that also fails then boot into WinRE again, and go to the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands: compact /U C:\bootmgr compact /U C:\ntldr If you for some strange reason have lost your Vista DVD, then you can also use a Windows 2000 / XP install CD and enter the recovery console instead and execute the following commands: attrib -c c:\bootmgr attrib -c c:\ntldr

Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.

Got acer aspire 5535 laptop it is comming up ''BootMGR missing press ctrl alt delete'' have tried this no success

Boot off the Windows Vista DVD and then click Next at the first prompt:
image16.pngYou should see a link in the lower left-hand side for “Repair your computer”
image17.pngThe installation process will attempt to find your Vista installation directory. If there’s more than one in the list, select the correct one and then use the Next button again.
image18.pngClick the first link for “Startup Repair”
image19.pngThe installation process will repair the system, and then prompt for you to reboot.
image20.pngAlternatively you could have chosen the Command Prompt option instead, and use the following command to fix the boot options only:
bootrec /fixboot
image21.pngAt this point you should be able to reboot your computer, remove the DVD and everything should be working. If not, then head over to our forums and ask your question there. We’ve got some top-notch geeks over there!

"BOOTMGR is missing"

Find yourself receiving "BOOTMGR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" message? Don't stress! Its easier to fix than you think. Here's how:

SOLUTION 1

- Get your Vista installation DVD and pop it into your drive.
- Then restart your computer.
- Set your computer to boot from DVD or CD in your BIOS.

Vista will ask you for language and keyboard layout information, after which you will be asked if you want to re-install Vista or repair your existing installation.
Select Repair. After which Vista's System Recovery Tool will start.

aab8e65.jpg

Select Startup Repair and let Vista do its thing! That really is all there is to it!

If that doesn't work try this:

SOLUTION 2

If the previous method does not resolve the problem, you can rebuild the BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment. To do this, follow these steps:

- Get your Vista installation DVD and pop it into your drive.
- Then restart your computer.
- Press a key when you are prompted.
- Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next
- Click Repair your computer
- Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next
- In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt
- Type bootrec /rebuildbcd and then press ENTER

• If Bootrec runs successfully, it will present you with the installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type Yes . A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully.

• If Bootrec cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order shown below: (Remember to press ENTER after each command)

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

bootrec /rebuildbcd

- Restart the computer.
