Question about Lincoln Electric LINK2400-+1 CV-305 MIG Welder with Options Input Power: 20

When pulling the trigger it trips 20 amp breaker. In a few seconds . Amprobe read 75 amps without striking an arc.

Use an ammeter that clamps around the wire to see how many amps it pulls. It sounds like a weak breaker.

Main breaker doesnt stay turned on


Tripping of the main breaker could be an indication of a short or an overload. To check for an overload you will need an amprobe to test the amperage load on the breaker. Turn all the secondary breakers off. Attach the amprobe by clamping it around one power wire. Turn the breakers on one at a time and check the reading of the amprobe. Most breakers will handle about 80 % of the breaker rating before tripping. If it trips below this point the breaker may be weak and will need to be replaced. If the amprobe pegs out at any time and the breaker trips the secondary breaker that was last turned on probably has a short in its wiring somewhere. Cuasing the breaker to trip. Underground wirng that has gone bad can sometimes take a while to trip the breakers so if there is any underground feeders it may be more difficult to track down a short. If the problem is an overload check both hot wire to see if the load is equal if the load is a lot higher on one leg than the other switching some circuits to the lower side may help. If the total load is just too high you may have to increase your service to a larger size. Hope -this helps

When the welder is first turned on I can weld with gas for about 5 seconds. Then the breaker trips. ( i have the proper wiring and breaker). The more times I reset the breaker the shorter the weld time...


Hi:
Just make sure that if you are using an extension cable between your machine and the power outlet, this cable is at least a 12 gauge size, if you are using a 14 or 16 it's too small to handle the amps.
Other point is to check that your breaker is 20 or 30 Amp capacity.

Arc fault breaker trips when you turn florescent and can lights on


Sounds like something is wrong with the light check the wiring. Unhook the light and try ther breaker if breaker does not trip then problem is in the circuit.

Breaker installed on generator. Keeps tripping under no load after approx. 1 minute of generator running


A tripping circuit breaker is an indication of an overload. You say there is no load on the breaker - how are you making this determination? Are you using an amprobe or some other meter?

A circuit breaker with NO load shouldn't ever trip. Likewise a circuit breaker carrying up to 80% of of the current it is rated for shouldn't trip either. Circuit breakers that carry more than 80% of their load will trip - if the load remains connected long enough. This is called "duty factor" or "service factor" The greater the load is in excess of 80%, the less time that the breaker will carry it before tripping.

An example of a 100 amp breaker with different loads on it (this 100 amp value was chosen for ease of doing the math):

80 amps - never trips
85 amps - trips after 48 hours
90 amps - trips after 16 hours
95 amps - trips after 8 hours
100 amps - trips after 4 hours
105 amps - trips after a few minutes
120 amps - trips after a few seconds
150 amps - trips instantly

This is only an example to show how a certain circuit breaker might trip under a load less than the rating stamped on the body or handle.

A circuit breaker that trips with no load or a load equal to or less than 80% of its rating is most likely defective. You need an amprobe or ammeter for amp readings. If the load is found to be 80% or less, there may be an issue of harmonics that is causing the tripping. You'll need to have special equipment and qualified persons to check harmonic problems. Most harmonic problems occur when the loads are not linear device (transformers). Examples of non-linear devices are "switching" (or solid state) power supplies like those in computers.

There is the liquid seeping out of the breakers, it is not water the box is dry and it feels like an oil of some kind. breakers are working and are not hot. i have not seen this before. what is it and what...


It is oil. It's used to extinguish the arc.

When a circuit breaker trips, there is an Arc of electricity made inside the breaker, due to the contacts.
The contacts are instantly brought away from each other.

There are three methods employed to extinguish that arc.

[Extinguish the arc. Non-technical explanation. With out some medium to extinguish the arc produced inside, it would go Z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-zap, instead of z-zap]

Oil, Air, and Sulfur Hexafluoride.

So yes, as long as the circuit breaker doesn't have to trip, and produce the arc inside, it is a working circuit breaker.

Is it a safe unit?

NO

The method employed to extinguish the arc if the breaker trips is leaking out.

Replace all breakers that are doing this.

Average cost for a GE single-pole 15, or 20 Amp is around $11 here. A few dollars more for 30 and 40 Amp, but usually double-pole breakers are used for 30, and 40 Amp.

20 amp breaker pops with only a light (60watts) and a small tv on. samething occurs in another room with an iron and a light on, These items can't possibly be brawing 20 amps. Is there a problem with these...


I have been an electrician for 11 years and when these breakers came out in 2005 what a nightmare. These circuit breakers are extremely sensitive. They are designed to sense loose connections and to protect your house from fires caused by them. By increasing the load (ie. more lights or tv) it increases the size of the "arc" created by the loose connection and the circuit breaker trips before the 20 amp maximum. What I normally find as the cause is a loose connection in one of the receptacles or switches on the circuit. A lot of times, installers will use the "quick stab" inserts on the back of the outlets or switches instead of the side screws. Usually, if you "side screw" all of the receptacles and switches it will resolve the nuisance tripping. One other item that can cause them to trip is too many dimmers on the arc circuit but it doesn't sound like that is the problem you're having.

Arc fault trips under load


Arc fault breakers are definitely a pain. First make sure the receptacles are made for a 20 amp circuit. Second vacuums, Curlers,and most appliances will trip your breaker since they create an arc or a short if you will to operate. That is exactly what these breakers are made for. To stop the arc. Apparently they never really thought the whole arc fault thing through. As per code in most of arizona you only need this breaker in bedrooms where this type of appliance is not used. They also are more prone to popping so make sure you aren't running something on each of the receptacles at the same time
