my Alpine CHM-S620 CD changer broke down and so I want to buy a new one (the cost for repair in my area is more expensive than a new changer). Is this the only model of cd changer that can be plugged into my mercedes e420?

Check out www.crutchfield.com . you can cross-reference your vehicle model and they will show you what is available for your vehicle. They carry a large inventory and I have purchased from them several times.
