Just about any system can be forced to shut down by holding the Power key/button for at least 5 seconds, some may require 10. This is not a good way to stop a system since stupid Windows has to unload in an organized manner or it can get hopelessly confused.
You might try running the Restore routine and back-date your system to an earlier day:
Open the Start menu, click on Run, enter "rstrui.exe" (no quotes) and click OK to start.
You should get a calendar showing which past days are available to run.
You won't lose any of your work but any updates installed since that past day are null and void so you may get messages from your AV program or from Win itself.

SOURCE: I have freestanding Series 8 dishwasher. Lately during the filling cycle water hammer is occurring. How can this be resolved

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: Compaq Armada M700 Shut Off During Windows XP Pro boot

It's usually caused by the Voltage-Regulator sub-board that is faulty M700/M300 - same problem. If the VR sub-board is replaced and problem still exists, mobo is faulty.

SOURCE: laptop locks up during shut down

Some computers do not work well using their "Sleep" settings. You might like to try seeing if your computer manufacturer has some new drivers available to address that problem. Barring that, just use hibernate instead of sleep during the day, and use Shutdown at the end of the day - this also ensures that your computer will update itself regularly. Not sure if that will help. Would love to know if this problem has been solved.

If you're still able to access your start menu:
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click next

Choose an available restore point, one of a time before the incident occurred. Then click next.

I'm not sure how long this will take but it will notify you of a successful restore.

Windows XP will not shut down.

I don't know if you've tried this yet,but here it is just in case.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance>Power Options>In the Power Options Properties dialog box, on the Power Schemes tab, click the Power schemes drop-down list and select the power scheme that most closely matches how you use your computer.
adjust the System standby and System hibernates settings if you are not happy with the default selection. On the Advanced tab, you can adjust the default behavior of the power buttons on your computer. Click Apply>OK

Please rate this a fixya

Go to Start > Run and type services.msc. Locate the nVidia Driver Helper item and right click it. Select Properties. Set the startup value of the service to “Manual” or “Disabled”.
Your computer should shut down normally now.
