The A/C clutch & pulley are pressed onto the compressor shaft.if the clutch is not engaging,it is most likely caused by a low freon condition,as there is a pressure switch that prevents engagement in a situation of low freon pressure.the clutch is no more than an electro-magnet,and cannot be removed w/unit in vehicle.

Not easy for your backyard meachnic. Once you remove the driver side tire, hub, cv joint, etc. You are able to remove transmission and pull clutch out. Maybe about 6 hours of work. Hope this helps...it will save you ALOT of money

Faulty throwout bearing. I know the VW tranys have an unusual clutch release system, I forget how it is set up. I believe the trany has to come out to replace the bearing. Good luck.
