Your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, chances are that your batteries need to be replaced because they're just too worn to properly power the camera. And then, of course, there's the possibility that your camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

My cannon powershot S5IS used to take great pics...now they are almost always very grainy. do i need to fix a setting or something? i have no idea!

Please see if the mode forr picture is set to normal, Try to select auto mode and then manual mode to see if there is any change.
If you notice that the grains come on in low light, try pictures in good light to confirm. If still bad the camera needs a check for a faulty imager unit./the CCD might be defective.
Take an estimate to decide.

How do I change the shutter speed?

This is "shutter lag," the delay between pressing the shutter release button and the camera actually taking a picture. This is a common situation with many compact cameras. The camera has to focus on the subject, meter the exposure, and switch the circuitry from displaying on the screen to recording the image and saving it in memory. More sophisticated (and expensive) DSLRs eliminate this shutter lag by having more dedicated hardware for this.

With a compact camera, you can reduce the shutter lag by anticipating the shot. Press the shutter release button halfway to focus and meter the exposure. Continue to hold the shutter release button halfway until the right time, then press it the rest of the way.

Cannon Powershot A-620 black screen can't review

Did you accidentally press the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera? This manually turns the screen on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder to take pictures. To turn the screen back on, just press this button one more time.

Out of focus pictures

Try allowing the camera to focus by pressing the shutter button halfway.  Wait for a beep then press the rest of the way to take the picture.  This should result in much sharper images.  If this helps please rate my solution.

Help

Check:
1 - If you're on a shooting mode (not on a video mode);
2 - If you have enough power from batteries (maybe flash is necessary and power is not sufficient...);
3 - If memory card is in...
Try it...

Grainy pictures

grainy pictures are possibly casued by a very high ISO (sensativity) setting, you should be on 100 or lower for best normal shots. Higher settings are for low light and custom shooting in strange lighting or aperature/shutter speeds. Try full auto setting.

Hi,

I posted this on another link to this site where they were having the sam eproblem so this may work for you.

OK, I think I worked it out. The shutter button was not working correctly. They wanted at least $182 to ship it off to a Canon repair facility. Give me a break! My husband spilled coffee on his personal laptop and then several weeks later spilled juice on his work laptop...I'm thinking...hello...learn any lessons yet. Anyway, he couldn't get the keyboard to work properly on his personal laptop (apparently it didn't like all the caffeine) so he bought some Precision Electronics Cleaner at Radio Shack and tried to clean it. That didn't work so we had to order another keyboard. But, that gave us the idea to try the cleaner on the shutter button. The button worked fine in the half way down focus position so we figured the spring under the button was still working but the contact when you pressed it all the way down was not activating the shutter. If we jiggled the button a bit it would take the photo so that meant the contact needed cleaning in order to take a picture with out mashing or jiggling. So short story long, I sprayed some in there and then blew some air into it to dry it out a bit quicker. The spray evaporates anyway, but that just sped up the process. It works like a charm now!!! YEAH!
Let us know if this helps. Good Luck!
:-)
