Most likely motor is bad. If it does evertything else, then selector switch is good. Either motor or bearings are bad.

Once dryer heats up towards end of cycle, drum quits spinning and won't restart, only hums

It could be a couple of things there could be lint on the motor shaft which will cause the motor to run hot and make to over temperature switch open or the hot air output on the back of the dryer may be plugged, just before or around the blower. Good luck

LG DLE5977W electric dryer hums when attempting to restart

This is usually the motor but not always. Remove the belt. Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing. Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.
If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor. If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers, pulley, rear bearing, then reassemble the dryer and try it again. If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor. Severe noise - drum is jammed and won't turn - LG DLE-5977 dryer

A piece of clothing is probably caught in the blower wheel.
Remove lint filter.
Use flashlight to look into filter housing to the lower left.
You may be able to retrive the item if you can see it.
Try rotating the drum in both directions while looking.

LG DLE5977 electric dryer, 3 years old. On power up: check filter display is lit. When cycle selction is made and start button is pressed, unit begins to heat, but dryer drum will not turn. Unit hums. I...

Your belt is likely broken. I am presuming you DO NOT have a setting on your machine that allows the drum to not turn or if yours does have such a setting you have not selected it!!!

I am not intimately familiar with your particular LG model even though rates me a LG expert.

Dryer tops are generally held in place with spring clips. Pop the top being careful to not mar the finish. Look for the belt (about 3/8 inch or so wide). The belt will be near the middle of the drum. Try to pick it up. If it is broken, you will be able to remove it. If it has slack in it but you can't remove it, it is probably off the motor pulley. Put it around the pulley through the belt tensioner.

Remove the front - use care you don't damage any wires.

The drum will fall free at this point. Take pictures with your cell phone to aid in reassembly.

You can get replacement belts from a advertiser, your local appliance parts place or visit

LG DLE5977W dryer has stopped and developed a motor hum. How can I fix it?

I am assuming that the hum indicates the motor is running but the drum is not turning.  Possibly a broken drum belt however the check filter warning is indicating low air flow so the blower wheel could be broken at the connection to the motor shaft.

Dryer not tumbling

Broken drive belt, or drive belt disengaged. Or stretched. Or lost tension spring. Humming is motor running, not driving drum.
