Toshiba big tv. Comes on fine nice picutre. about 10 seconds after turn on a "black rectangle" appears in the lower half of the screen

Chances are it's just the closed captioning is turned on and set for "text" mode. Use the remote to go through the caption settings until it's turned off and that should clear up the box.

I've written a tip that explains what's happened and how to take care of the problem.

Half screen picture

This is commonly caused by failing capacitors in the vertical deflection amp area and sometimes with the output drive devices.

An experienced TV tech can troubleshoot your set and service it for you.

My Samsung DLP is having the same problem.  Not sure what to do, but I will contact my warranty place for the second time.  Hopefully they'll fix it.  Any other suggestions?

Sony Trinitron KV-32S40 32" TV problem

This is a simple and common problem. The solder joints on the vertical output IC have cracked loose. I actually did a housecall on the exact same set with the exact same symptoms this morning! A good tech will resolder the pins of the vertical output IC and all other major solder joints on the main board and the set will play fine.

You have a bad connection on the CRT board thats mounted on the end of the picture tube it sounds like, or the socket on that board that plugs into the TV set is intermittant or has a bad solder connection on it. Good Luck

Screen split with black bar through center, top of picture shows in bottom

It sounds as you desribe, the vertical output IC and or the b+ feed capacitor off the Hi voltage transformer feeding the vert. IC its required voltage. Not a really hard job to replace, but not for a handi person to do. This should be left to the professional, as there are no user serviceable parts inside this set and with the HI voltage and the safety issues its best to call somesone to assist you with this repair. Good Luck
