Question about Televison & Video

Loss of terrestrial digital channels. Channels okay after unplugging for some time. Then re-occurs. Have updated firmware. I believe it's a digital tuner power supply capacitor problem. Is it and which capacitor would it be?

If it's the eeprom erasing the channels, how am I able to get all the channels after unplugging the set for a few hours? Where would it get the info on the saved channels if it was erased? It does sound like a power loss to this eeprom circuit which would indicate a component in the power supply and the only thing I can think of is a capacitor that breaks down and unplugging discharges it. Is there one in the eeprom power supply/ Do you have access to a schematic?

Here's another thought. The digital stations are remembered after a time (more than 4 hours). It may be in the digital tuner power supply which is why I looking at a capacitor in that circuit.

The DMR-ez47vk digital tuner occasionally loses the terrestrial digital stations. After unplugging for ~8 hours and then re-powering, the stations are received again. What is causing the digital tuner circuit to not function and how does it
recover after being unplugged for a long time? It sounds like a capacitor discharge problem.

This is a Panasonic DMR-EZ47K DVD Recorder.

Panasonic DMR-eZ47K. Terrestrial digital channels were able to be recovered by unplugging for ~4 hours and then re-powering. Now, they're lost all the time. Suspect a capacitor in the digital tuner, can you direct me toward the right one?

THanks Johnny. I'll try your suggestions.

Not knowing the model it is impossible to tell what cap it may be if it even is a cap.The problem does definetly sound like the tuner- in order for the tuner to work 3 voltages must be present 12VDC,5VDC and Tuning votage which varies from 1-32VDC according to the channel/band selected.Check the DC voltages that feed the tuner (with a scope) and look for ac noise or poor filtering on any of the supplies if any is found trace back to supply source and check/replace caps in that area.

I don't have the manual for this model sorry I can't help any further. Did you check tunning voltages when the problem is present - you could also try freezing the power supply suspected capacitors to see if the problem is heat related. Use a can of computer duster upside down as freeze spray and don't spray near optical pick up area. you would have to order the service manual to trace the problem in more detail.

Like most problems in TVs if the eeprom was defective you replace it, and if you have a bad capacitor most likely ones to not holdup are around 1000uf 16v/ 220uf25v/ 2200uf 16v/and like all DVD /VCR it is cheaper to buy another one then to repair! Pawn shops are selling them for as little as 35.00

If it is digital tuner PSU capacitor, the Digital tuner will just shut down , or not start , or freeze.
In your case the internal eprom where channels get stored is erasing itself. For that reason channels are lost. The Eeprom memory is kept thanks to an internal battery, that will look like a kind of squared capacitor, or like a coin. The battery will last many years and is not replaceable. The problem is not the battery, but the circuit that supplies power to the eeprom to keep the memory alive, or the eprom chip itself, that is not holding info.
A firmware problem can also cause the problem.
In both situations you will need firmware image, and this is usually difficult to find.

As I told you, in normal condition, the digital tuner will remember the channel stations frequencies are stored using energy from an internal battery , for that reason the tuner PSU is hardly involved.

Since the problem occurred after a firmware update, it may also be firmware related.

I would try a new firmware update, just in case. If that does not fix it I would also call manufacturer to ask for an older firmware version, so to downgrade the firmware to previous version.

I just acquired a Toshiba 32HL95 TV and cannot get any hd channels although I have a digital cable box. I have tried using the coaxial, hdmi and video connections to no avail.

Try configuring your antenna input. Menu, Installation, Terrestrial, Input Config select your antenna 1 or 2 and > arrow over to select cable. Next auto program: under Terrestrial, Channel Program...this take some time.

I have an Alba 32880hdf freeview tv. I cannot record freeview programmes to my panasonic NV-FJ 780 vcr which has 2 scart sockets. I have no problem recording the teresteral channels. Can you help pls

Hi Victor,

You can't record the Freeview channels from the TV. It doesn't work that way. The reason you can still record terrestrial channels is because the VCR is still connected to your roof aerial with a co-axial cable and the VCR has its own built-in analogue tuner for recording terrestrial TV programmes.

To record the digital Freeview channels, you will either need to connect a separate Freeview set-top box to the VCR, or buy a VCR which has a built-in digital (DVB-T) tuner.

The VCR does not record programmes from the TV. It needs to be connected directly to the signal source, i.e. your aerial.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

Regards,
BElectric

Have problem with Philips On digital terrestrial receiver (DV3). Since the digital switchover in Bolton, where I live, it wont let me do an update. Can't get any channels now. Stewart

Try unplugging the unit from the wall, unplug the Aerial cable from the box. Plug the mains back in and switch on. Do a channel scan (with the aerial still unplugged). Reconnect aerial and do another scan. With luck it will have flushed the old settings and pick up the channel changes.

My sony bravia digital channels always drop out of signal. Sometimes a channel has no signal for a couple of weeks. Could that be a fault with the tv?

For tuner problems, especially the digital channels, you should check for a TV firmware update at www.sonystyle.com. I was having some strange loss of digital channels on our 40" Bravia, starting with channels only appearing for a second before the screen produced a 'No Signal' message. After we tried the automatic retuning, then we could not even get the one second signal. None of this appeared on the description of the download. However, we downloaded the patch to our PC, loaded the file (19 MB) onto a small flash drive, which we then used to upgrade the firmware in the TV. All our digital tuner problems disappeared!!

I cant receive freeveiw channels

I don't know what make of TV you have but some manufacturers have two tuners at the rear of the TV. One for terrestrial signal & one for digital signal. If this is the case put the aerial into the digital input & try retuning. If this does not work then if you could provide the details of you TV eg. make & model, then I will try to help you further.
