Question about Hitachi 50V500 50 in. HD-Ready LCD Television

1 Answer

Limited colors (almost like VGA)

I have a 3 year old Hitachi 50v500. The lamp says it has 5400+ hours on it (from the service menu). Just recently, it started displaying limited colors, for lack of a better description. The picture isn't too bright or too dark (so I don't think it's a lamp problem) and there's no specific color that won't display (I can see reds, blues, greens, cyans, magentas, yellows, etc), it's just that the colors are very limited like an old VGA monitor. Instead of seeing various shades of, say, blue, I only see a couple shades of blue so it's very splotchy. Screen shots are at

The generic answer for problems with the 50v500 seem to be the light engine. I've seen various posts about Hitachi covering the cost for the part but the owner paying the install price. Is that true no matter how old the tv is or does it have to be under warranty? I presume since mine is over 3 years old that it's not under warranty anymore.

Re: Limited colors (almost like VGA)

You have a defective light engine. Replacing the bulb will not solve the problem. We just went through this so here's what you need to do. Call Hitachi's customer service relations (not customer service) at 800-654-7013 and tell them what the set is doing and that you have a bad light engine. Hitachi will act like they have not heard of this but will give you the names of certified dealers in your area. Once you have a tech come out and confirm the problem, call Hitachi back, at the number listed above and they will call the dealer to confirm the problem. Once they confirm it with the dealer, they will send out a brand new light engine to the dealer ( at Hitachis expense, around $1500) and the tech will come to your home and install it.

Here's the kicker, if you're not still under warranty, you will have to pay the install. Our install was $400 but worth it to us on a $
$3600 set we've only had 3 years and we've loved. PLEASE DO NOT let any dealer or department store tell you that you have to pay for this part. Hitachi has not recalled the part but they are paying for it. It sounds like from some of the other post on this board that some dealers and department stores where the set was bought are trying to make money off of the free part Hitachi is sending and PLEASE deal only with Hitachi's customer relations department at the 800 number I listed above. Hitachi's regular customer service will be no help to you. Good Luck:)

Also, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE UNDER WARRANTY FOR HITACHI TO COVER THE PART. You only pay the install. Our TV is 3+ years old. They are doing this in hopes of not having to be required to do a recall on this part (would cost them lots more). It should run pretty smoothly with Customer Relations.

The color on my hitachi 50v500 is dull and not sharp! Help

Try replacing the lamp first, If your lamp is over a year old. Next Clean the optical lens. This is kinda of involved just getting into the unit to clean. You might want to contact an authorized servicer for this.

Hitachi 50V500 double imaging -- makes you think you need glasses

I might also help to have the manufacturer help you step by step process. They can help direct you through the steps otherwise it shall also let you know directly on the manufacturers website [] A year back they used to have an interactive assistance approach but it appears they no longer are offering that.

How long have you had your lamp in there for? Also, have you hooked it up to another type of connection lately? If so, what is it?

Let me know those answers to better assist you. In the mean time you can also contact the manufacturer regarding this mishap to get the step-by-step over the phone or via their website.

I'm eager to hear how things work out for you. I wish you the best of luck with it!

Replaced lamp and new wires, then changed back to old wires still nothing.

Once you replaced the lamp did you reset the hours under the menu? If you do not do that some times the set believes it's in warning mode and prevents a potential implosion of the lamp which creates issues such as the set not turning on, staying on that long, or the lamp light still flashes.

Let me know how that works out for you.

Also, what "old wires" are you referring to?

Hitachi 50v500

For $350.00!!!!

Just do not expect it to be a great picture for long but, you never know you may have a rare good one. For that price I would put it
in the garage and have something special to watch the games on. Even if it goes bad the lamp is almost worth that in some circles.

The lamps can do many odd things when they are on the way out includung the picture coming on and then dissapearing for a while then coming back. The lamps adverage life is 2000 hours, and at 3-5 years it is on borrowed time.
