To test the thermocouple you will need to heat the tip with a lighter and use fluke meter to test the millivoltage being produced by it. To purge the unit of air shut off the gas line valve. Disconnect the connecter on the unit. And turn on the valve just slightly for a few seconds and release a little bit of gas. Be very careful doing this!!! Make sure there are no sources of ignition nearby. A few seconds of bleeding should be enough to clear out any air in the gas line. Then re-connect and tighten connector using two wrenches(one for a backup) then turn thee valve back on and listen/smell for any gas and soap fittings to check for leaks. After the air is clear if this is a manually set pilot then push the ASO button you use to set the pilot. You may need to hold it for a minute to make sure all the air goes thru the pilot. Then light the pilot while holding the ASO button in. You may need to hold this for a minute or two. When you let go it should stay lit. Look for a strong pilot flame that is blue not yellow and is making proper impingment with the thermocouple/pilot generator head assembly. You will not be able to fully test this unit without the water on due to this unit works off of a pressure/flow switch and the burner will not come on if it does not have water flowing. If it is not electric ignition and the pilot is lit manually then you should be able to light the pilot and have it stay on.

I have a old Rinnai gas water heater Mod REU 55 FTB, after a year not in used, now the gas can not flow, how is the solution ? Thx

If it hasn't been in use for a year or so there could be a couple problems. Sometimes the gas dissipates from the line after an extended period of inactivity. You may need to try several times to light the pilot or the line may need to be purged. Also, if there's gas to the appliance and the pilot will light but not stay on the thermocouple is bad and should be replaced.

Have a rinnae royal gas lok heater. Cant start it after gas was shut off. How do you get the ignition to work and start the pilot light again

When the gas was turned OFF, air got in the line(s) and created an air pocket. This air will need to purged from the system, before the heater will light. It only the shutoff valve on the gas line to the heater was turned OFF, it will be easier to purge. If your Rinnai heater has manual ignition rather than electronic ignition. Holding the control down in the Pilot position, will eventually purge the air. If you have electronic ignition, continually trying to light the unit will do the same thing, but take longer to accomplish. Consulting your Rinnai will also help you with this situation.

Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have a Rinnai REU 55ft, which ignites but won't stay lit. We've cleaned the filters, fiddled with the dials and ensured that the batteries and propane are good. Any thoughts?

Hello,
In these water heaters there is a part called a "flame sensor", if you can read the wiring diagram/schematic spend some time trying to find where it is at; it will be located directly in the burner compartment. It senses that the gas is lit and there is flame, if it does not then it will shut the gas off almost within 3 seconds.
Solution- Turn off the power to the unit completely and take the flame sensor out and clean it with a 000 steel wool pad. These flame sensors develop carbon from the gas and then stop reading properly. You can test the measurement if you had an electrical meter (uA is how it would be listed on your meter- most basic meters have this function).
Let me know if this works, if not I have another solution you could try (I'm pretty sure this will do the trick though) James

I have an old Rinnai energysaver 302 (in house when we purchased property). There seems to be no heat from the unit. the only controls visible are an on/off switch and a temperature slide. Is there a pilot...

These are electronic ignition, you simply turn it on and it lights itself. Check the power supply is on. Also makes sure the filters at the rear are clean (they just slide out). Also check the flue terminal outside is clerar of any debris/foliage. If it has not been used for a long time it might need to be purged of air in the gas line. Basically run through turning it on; if it doesn't light wait about 10 minutes before trying again. After 5 or 6 attempts this doesnt work it's likely to need a technician to come and have a look at it. These units are like cars they don't like sitting doing nothing for long periods of time

I "think" I have pinpointed the problem but want confirmation before I buy this part. the sequence of "lighting " the pilot is working fine and the water flow is circulating as it should. when I "turn"...

To keep the Pilot running... TYPICALLY the instructions say hold the pilot down for 30 seconds to allow the thermocouple to assume control... If extending that 30 seconds a wee bit does not work and your "pilot" keeps going out...

You have indeed found your "trouble"

Need a diaphragm for my rinnia water heater reu 56es

Sounds like tank froze with water in it. Have you checked the connections on the top of the heater they could be leaking also i would check water lines around that area for tees or 90 degree fittings. You can pull heater out and try to check it out. you can fill water heater with water to check to see if heater has a crack in it.

You have a dirty pilot assembly and maybe even a bad ECO switch (safety switch). I would suggest replacing the ECO and removing the pilot assembly and clean it out.
