Question about Mad Dog Multimedia MegaVault USB 2.0 External Drive Case

I cannot get my Windows XP Dell Inspiron desktop to recognize my Mad Dog Multimedia Megavault device from My Computer. We placed several backups from two computers on this device when I first acquired it about two years ago, so I know that at one time it was functioning and we could see those backups as folders on Drive J (assigned to the MegaVault device). Now we can't see Drive J.

    I cannot see the J drive (the Mad Dog devce from Computer Management, Administrative Tools). I switched USB port cables. With either cable connected to the Mad Dog device, I cannot see it. But I can see the other external device (a hard drive from another computer) through either cable.

    I should also tell you that the run light on the Mad Dog is on, so the device seems to be getting power.

    I cannot see my Mad Dog Multimedia MegaVault device on my Windows XP, Dell Inspiron desktop. It's plugged into a USB port and the run light is on. I swapped cables and USB ports with another external device which is working from either cable, either port. I went to Administrative Tools and can't see the device logically. I may not have the drivers for the device. I bought it almost two years ago.

It sounds like it could be a USB issue. Yes, I realize it worked with other drives but USB can sometimes be flaky. Try these steps:

Check Device manager to see whether the device displays under the USB section or the Other Devices section. To do this, follow the procedures below:

1.Right-click My Computer, and click Properties.
2.Double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.
3.Check for the device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers or under the Other Devices section.
4.If the device is found under Universal Serial Bus controllers or Other Devices, then remove the device from Device Manager, disconnect the USB device, restart the computer, and install the USB device software following the manufacturer's suggestions.

If the USB device is missing, double-click the USB Root Hub, click the Power tab, and then click Power Properties (if it is shown). The available ports and power usage is shown. Remove the devices and use a powered HUB if the displayed power is over 500mA. To check the properties of a HUB double-click HUB and the HUB information window will open.

Remove high-speed USB cables that are over three meters and use high-speed cables that are less than three meters.

There may be an issue with the USB port. Try plugging into a different USB port. If the USB device displays in Device Manager after plugging the cable into a different port, then Uninstall and reinstall the USB device software driver.


Disconnect all USB devices and use the following steps to remove the USB Host Controller:
1. Restart the computer and press the F8 key repeatedly after the first screen displays. A Startup screen displays.
2. Select Safe Mode and press Enter. Windows starts with Safe Mode displayed in all four corners of the desktop.
3. Right-click My Computer, and click Properties.
4. Click the ( +) plus sign next to the Universal Serial Bus.
5. Select USB Root Hub, and then click Remove. Continue until all USB Root Hubs are removed.
6. Close Device Manager.
7. In Windows 98 and Me, click Start, click Find, and click Files or Folders. In Windows XP, click Start, click Search, and then click all Files and Folders.
8. Set the Look in box to Local Hard (C:;D:).
9. In the Named box type usb.inf, then click Find Now.
10. Right-click USB, then Install.
11. Restart the computer and verify that the USB Root HUB exists in Device Manager.
12. Install the device software driver using the manufacturer's recommended method.
13. Reconnect the USB device.

Consult the manufacturer of the device for support if the device still fails to display.

NOTE: USB drivers for the notebook are part of the chipset. If necessary the USB drivers required by the notebook can be reinstalled from Application recovery.

Go to Computer Management in Admin Tools of Control Panel and see if drive J is visible to this tool. Also you will have to install its drivers if there are any before you can use one.

all light scribe should be compatible with windows vista ..the issue is to install the correct program and driver to operate it ..If it has the interface to connect it ..and it sees it and accept the driver ...will work ..It does not depend on the system configuration ...cause if it runs vista its already fast enough and have at least 1 G of ram ..

My Mad Dog external hard drive does not show up as a drive. How do I get this to show so I can access my information.

Connect it to a different computer, to see if the device is working at all.

If not, and if the Mad Dog is still under warranty, then exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

Otherwise, disassemble the casing, remove the disk-drive,
and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive is OK. This would imply that the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the casing is the problem.

The computer stopped recognizing the external drive

please check if it is a new external drive.
If it is new external drive, please format.
Note: all of the data would be lost on it.

Do I need software to get my comp to recognize a new Mad Dog Multimedia external DVD/burner drive?


Depending on which version of windows you are using, you might need to install the drivers for the device.

I know XP and older versions have a mush smaller internal driver database than windows vista or windows 7.

You don't necessarily need to install software to operate the device, just need the driver installed, then your computer will recognize the device.

Installed a 500G hard drive in the 3.5" enclosure. It doesn't recognize it as a hard drive. How do I fix?

Make sure that your HD was installed properly in enclosure. Remove the cable then atached again.

Computer doesn't recognize disc in Mad Dog dvd-rw drive

Try going to the Mad Dog web site and download the latest driver for your drive and then reinstall the Roxio software. Good Luck

MacBook and Mad Dog Multimedia Compatible?

According to (check the requirements tab, note that it doesn't work on firefox due to bad coding), it only supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP (even though it doesn't say so, it's likely it's also supported by Windows 98 and Vista) but unless someone made drivers for mac os x, it doesn't look like it'll work.
