Question about Toshiba Satellite 2455-S305 Notebook

1 Answer

I have three Toshiba Satellites, 2455-s305 (an older model with desktop P4, 1G Ram, XP pro, etc.)They boot and run, but have problems: (1) When turning this one on, I must press the power button, then press another button within a few seconds, or it won't come on. Power off works fine. The LCD backlight also will not come on, even though the inverter is known good (runs fine on another computer). Power is present, the fuses are good, and the inverter works fine in another identical laptop, so I believe it is good. I assume the input control signals are not getting to the inverter to tell it to turn on, and set the brightness, or both. I have not been able to find schematics so I don't know what to look for; I have determined that there are nine connections to the input of the inverter: five are for power and ground, four are control inputs (?). (2) This one boots and runs fine, the screen works, as does an external monitor plugged into the VGA output on the back, but, the LCD backlight won't come on. I have tried replacing the inverter with a known good inverter with no luck. I have measured power available to the board, and the fuses are good; the chips are receiving power. (I have a light inserted at the top of the screen so I can read the screen when the backlight is off, so I know the machine works) Same conditions as number one, above. (3) The mini-pc board connections inside are connected to the correct Toshiba networking board (wireless), and I have tested the board in another computer where it works fine. But, this one doesn't seem to be able to "see" the networking at all; the device manager shows yellow question marks for them, and the properties boxes indicate the drivers can't be loaded, but I know they are present; the configuration for this one is identical to another working one. I've also swapped hard drives in case there is something necessary hidden on the drive of the working laptop). Opening the Networking window shows that the system "thinks" there is a VPN network board present, but there isn't; must have been from the previous owner. I have deleted the connection, the software, the drivers, etc., but no luck. As far as I can tell, the configuration of this one is identical to another one which works (again, I swapped hard drives just in case). I believe the BIOS is the same as a good unit; if that is a potential source of the problem, I can try burning it again with BIOS from Toshiba's web site. Seems like checksum would show a problem if the BIOS is bad, though... The LCD backlight comes on, but, the keys which control brightness on the keyboard (Using Fn key) have no effect on the brightness, nor do the icons showing that brightness is being adjusted show on the screen. The brightness functions seem dead. Each of these computers is several years old, but they are valuable in the application they are used for, and there is no money to replace them. If you have any ideas about where to look for problems, I would appreciate your help. I have found a field service manual for this model, but it does not show schematics or other most technical information; it only shows how to replace major parts as assemblies, etc. Many thanks, Larry

My Toshiba Satellite 2455 S305 Boots but the screen stays black. I have tried an F8 startup with no results. Does the screen need to be replaced or is there another part that might have failed?

Hi ccavanaugh38...

It could be a faulty screen or inverter causing your problem.
To try and find out which one it is, hook your laptop up to an outside monitor and start the computer, if the picture comes on then the problem is the screen, if if does not come on then it is the inverter in need of replacement.

Hello there:
when you replaced the hard dive did you go into the bios and make sure that the harddrive was recognized and set up as the primary drive.
also you may be able to get around this by pressing the reset buttona on the back of the unit and hold in and turn on the power at the same time
than release after 10 seconds and if this still doesent work try to boot by pressing the f12 key as it starts up ok?
best regards michael

My toshiba 2455-s305 wont boot up

If you are familiar with your laptop, i.e. the locations of hard drive, try to take it out of the its bay and put it back again. Also, if you can have someone check your battery packs, because from my experience with this laptop, when the battery packs is not charging well, i got some booting up problems.
