Question about Canon BubbleJet i550 InkJet Printer

Waste Tank Counter Reset - Canon i550

I've been getting an error message with 1 green and then 7 orange blinks on my Canon i550. Different people have said different things about what this means: the service manual that I have says it means that the waste ink counter is full, while some people on this website have quoted from some other service manual (apparently also for the i550, but that's unclear) that says that it means that the printer head is broken.

In any case, I've been trying to get the printer to go into service mode, and that hasn't been working. I've followed these steps from the service manual:

3.3.2 Service mode functions
This printer has a Service mode to set service only settings and output test prints. The Service mode can be
entered using the control panel.

1) With the printer power OFF, while pressing the Resume button, press the Power button. (Do not release the
power button.)
2) While pressing the Power button, release the Resume button, press the Resume button again twice, and then
release the Resume button and Power button.
3) The green indicator flashes during initialization.
When the indicator stops flashing and remains on, press the Resume button the specified number of times to
select the function. [the table below notes that it is 4 times]
(The indicator toggles between orange and green each time the Resume button is pressed.)
4) After selecting the function, press the Power button, and the green indicator will light, and the function will
be executed.

I've tried these steps many times, both with the printer closed and open, and both with it connected and disconnected from the computer, but inevitably it gets stuck between steps 2 and 3; i.e., the green indicator never flashes during initialization and then remains on. Instead, the printer just goes back to the 1 green-7 orange set. I'm able to press the resume button four times, and the indicator light does change colors each time I press it, but when I finally press the power button to confirm, nothing happens. I've also tried some other commands, like "Service Test Print" (1 press of the resume button), hoping that a response would be more obvious, but still nothing happens. In either case, if I press the power button again, the printer turns off, and if I press the resume button again, the indicator light changes color with each press. Anyone have any ideas about how I can reset the waste tank counter?

Thanks.

SOURCE: The specified ink cassette cannot be found.

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink or toner cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridges that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks or toner causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead or photo conductors.
If you are using factory new ink or toner cartridges, then please call the manufacturer’s Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

SOURCE: canon i550 yelow light on:

Had the same problem with my I550. Was going to buy a new printer (I4000) since I could get one for about $30 more than the price of a new print head. I like canon printers with the individual ink tanks and have had no problems with the I550 for about three years.

Decided to try moving the paper thickness lever back an forth a number of times since some of the error messages indicated it could not determine the setting of the paper thickness lever. I don't know how the printer determines this switch setting but I thought if some contacts are slightly oxidized that movement might break up some of the oxidation. After operating the lever about a dozen times the printer started working. Hope this will help.

Canon i550-turn on-orange/green 8x then long green

From the Canon website:

Issue: Alarm / Power light flashes orange 8 times consecutively (Waste Ink Nearly Full Error)
Solution: Ink Absorber Replacement Options i550

Ink Absorber Replacement Options

This printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer. Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible by pressing the <Resume> button on the printer. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.

Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk.
