It seems like that "free" partition manager, was not free after all. When it's something as important as your HD you should seriously consider anything free as "if this doesn't work, u'll get NO help" type of thing. It sounds like it's trying to boot from the part of the drive that you partitioned and now can't because there is no OS there (or a damaged one). Depending upon how important the folders are u may want to consider professional recovery. Wish I had better news.

New computer built, XP installed, no full HDD capacity??

Check your motherboard BIOS specs. I know that Windows XP can see a larger hard drive but some BIOS issues could limit the maximum partition.
(My XP box started with a small drive but I added a larger SATA drive later and formated it with the XP disc management software. One caveat: I was using SP3)

To expand your partition, try using a third party partitioning software option. These will often save you from having to reinstall the os (sometimes things go wrong but mostly they are good). I've had good luck with Paragon Partition Manager and Partition Magic (before it was purchased by Symantec).

I hope this helps.

(Paragon offers a 30-day free trial of their Partition Manager software; however I am not aware of the limitations of the software.)

Windows doesn't recognize recovery partition after os reinstall

The issue you are having involves using multiple systems,...If your emachine came with vistan and you installed xp, you voided your warranty status...However remove your dual boot and stick to vista if you wanna keep your restore partition working properly.....On a side note theres usually conflict with running OEM OS's on dual boot...typically it doesnt work and if it does it doesnt work like you want it to! so here is what you can do..Call Emachine up and fib to them a bit (just alittle) tell them that you cought a nasty bug and it messed with your restore partition and now you cant restore your pc....request the factory programing discs (if you ask nicely they'll hook you up 99.99% of the time) you get the discs so you can reprogram the pc to factory spec if you ever wanted to. Now use a retail version of vista and a retail version of xp. and create your dual boot, feel free to remove your restore partition if you want (cause you have the factory programing discs if you wanna go back to stock stuff YAY) I hope this helps!

Problem installing xp

You can install both wista and xp in the same computer, better for this to create new partition (resize ild one and free some space and create partition in its place) then install XP created partition (partition create is possible professional tools paragon partition manager, norton partition magic or other).
afrer restart only XP works, then insert VISTA install cd and "fix boot"
Here is brief discussion about this VISTA>XP or XP>VISTA.
Take care of drivers may some of them dont be created for XP if your pc is super new.

I installed Paragon Partition Manager and set up boot manager. It said to restart my computer and I did. Now there is a boot screen that only shows one partition it says XP and the right side says boot...

If I were you I would pull the harddrive out, slave it to another machine and save all your documents before putting your harddrive back in and doing a full Dell restore.
Any wrong move at this point is likely to damage the MBR and render your machine unable to boot up at all.

When I boot up my computer before windows xp loads it asks which operating system I want to run,and it gives me 2 choices WINDOWS XP HOME, or, WINDOWS XP HOME. You use the up and down arrows to select...

simply you can remove the second option in the boot.ini.

go to the or right click the my computer at the desktop and the properties. and then click"advance TAb" in the start up and recovery, click "setting" and then "edit"

you will see this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Timeout=30 change to: 0

and then delete this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
after deleting you must save it.

and then restart the system

Please leave a comment b4 your rate, Thanks!

How to remove a second installation of a windows o/s

you would not have been able to install xp home over xp pro as pro is an upgrade from home, so xp pro will be on a different drive partition, so the last version you put on will be on the 'C' drive as thats the one that is bootable. Follow your instructions, or simply use your xp disc to format the drive and install XP home.
