Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

The self-cleaning lock on door of my 2001 48" dual fuel range will not engage to begin the cleaning process, on either of the ovens. I turn the function knob to Self Clean and the temp dial to Clean, but nothing happens. I have cleaned them in the past with no problems.

The model number is VDSC485-4GQBU. The range is a 2001 48" dual fuel with a
36" and a 12" oven, both with separate auto self-cleaning (automatic door locks) functions. We
tried wiggling the locking hook, warming the oven prior to activating
the self-cleaner, and unplugging-replugging, but nothing has worked. I am not electronically handy, so if this requires verifying if the control panel is sending voltage to the meters that drive the locking mechanism, I will have to resort to the $50 service call from my dealer here in Columbia, MO.

Does the oven have self locking latches or are the manual? I assume that they are self locking. There is a switch that is activated when the locks are in place as a safety for the self-cleaning cycle. If those switches are not engaged or shorted out the unit will not start self cleaning. So if the locking mechanism is automatic you will need to verify that the control panel is sending voltage to the motors that drive the locking mechanism. If it is a manual locking system you will need to verify that the control panel is sending a signal to the switches for the locks and that the switches are functioning properly. You can test the switches for continuity with a fluke meter. They should have continuity when pressed. And with the fluke meter you can verify that the control panel is sending a signal to the switch and locking mechanism motors if it has them. Is this a double oven with two seperate oven controls(smaller oven/larger oven)? Is the self cleaning feature for both ovens? A reply with a specific model number will help me to advise you further. Thanks

That is a very nice range...anyways it sounds like the locking motors are not getting a signal. I really doubt that both locking motors have gone out at the same time. It is going to require testing electrical components and sounds like you will be better off paying the $50 dollars and having the professional take care of it.

Oven door is locked out - Sears no help

      1. Step 1 Read the display on the electronic oven controls, where the clock and timer normally appear. If the display reads "CLN" while the "Door Locked" light is on, the Kenmore range is in self-clean mode. When the Kenmore range is in self-clean mode, you must stop the cleaning process before the door will unlock.
      2. Step 2 Stop the self-cleaning process by pressing and holding the "Stop/Clear" button for three seconds. The oven lock should disengage after three seconds. In some cases, a malfunction between the control panel and the locking mechanism prevents the door from unlocking.
      3. Step 3 Hold the light switch for several seconds if the "Stop/Clear" button fails to unlock the range door. Engaging the light switch for several seconds resets the entire locking mechanism and overrides the "Stop/Clear" button.

Locked oven door

OK, when you go to use the "Self Clean" function, what happens is special door "Interlocks" engage to absolutely ensure they door can in NO WAY come open during and for some considerable time later. You see the "Clean" is heating up to so,e absurd temperature, about 700 -900 Degrees! This basically BURNS everything up. So when this happens, the Doors stay looked, if you hit cancel and it DID NOT do anything, then try removing from Power, totally for a while and reconnect. If it did do the clean, then often this procedure burns out the thermistor inside, and then the doors stay closed too. You will have to check, which one. Also it may have "Glitched" the controller. Hopefully removing from power will work.

I cant get my viking 30inch electric range to self clean. it has a self clean spot on the knob and on the temperature knob but when both in place nothing happens.

You might need to lock the oven door to get the self clean to go on. My stove had a lever which locked the oven door when you pushed it sideways. It was in the middle above the oven door, in the gap... Hope this helps!
