Also could be a bad ground. Quick way to check remove top cover and shroud. Remove 2 slip connectors (ground wires) going to coil. Put it all back and try to start. If it starts it's the ground. If it doesn't try replacing the coil as discussed above. If it does start, replace each ground one at a time if it does not start, you know that ground is bad. Retry, same procedure with other ground by itself. If it does not start then it also is bad. Trace the ground wires and rerun or test and splice. You can also run the mower with out the ground, but they serve as kill and safety switches so I do not recommend this.
If you have a bag sensor you can easily check it with a meter. Located on top right corner of my mower. Bag bar rests on it. Cut the 2 wires 1/2 way from the sensor, put a mutlimeter to measure the resistance when there is no bag it should read 0 ( the switch is closed). Place the bag on, retest, if it is working it should now read closed, this keeps the mower from runnning without a bag

One of two problems, ignition module has gone bad or carburetor needs rebuilding. I would replace the ignition module first. If you have the model, type and code of the B&S engine, you can go to www.precisionope.com and look at the IPL for the part number you need.

Mower won't start spark plug turns black

Black carbon fouling on the plug is a sign of the engine running too rich, start by replacing the air filter and plug and try again.

Troy built mower honda 160 engine oil leak around governer shaft. no oil seal but shows one on parts breakdown. Can not find part number for shown seal.

Drain oil from mower until proper level. Remove spark plug and pull starter rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray starter fluid in cylinder pull rope several times to clean out. Replace fouled plug with new spark plug. Remove air cleaner, ensure no oil present, replace filter as needed. Clean air filter box with carb cleaner. Install new air filter reattach filter cover. Prime engine, pull starter rope 1/2 way 4 times to help prime, then pull starter rope fully up to 10 times to start.

Lawn Boy mower will not start. New gas and plug.

Is the plug getting wet? if not, try introducing fuel to the intake and attempt to start it again, the interlock on the handle works by killing the ignition fire and applying a brake to the flywheel, this should be a Tecumseh engine, carb troubles are quite prevalent on these, by substituting fuel to the intake you are acting as the fuel supply, if it starts and runs briefly you have confirmed a fuel system issue

Lawn boy 2 cycle mower won't start

Replace the spark plug and retry.
If a new plug does not work push the spring button on the bottom of the carburetor to make sure fresh fuel is in the fuel bowl.
if this does not work remove the spark plug and squirt some light oil (like wd 40) right into the spark plug hole; roll the engine over slowly a couple times using the starter rope. put the plug back in and snap the plug wire in place. If the mower now starts after a couple pulls it means the rings are worn, replace the rings.

Engine will not start, no spark

Try taking of the engine shroud and cleaning the magnets on the fly wheel. Also clean the two little prongs that are really close to the fly wheel. Use fine sand paper or emery cloth. Then check the spark plug wire for rust (clean if any). Try replacing the spark plug if it is old.

Let me know if this helps.
