What or how does the battery get its charge

Most bike have an alternator driven off the left-hand crankshaft shaft.
This turns with the engine, producing the AC charging power.
This power then runs through a voltage regulator, that both converts the the AC voltage into DC voltage, and regulates the amount of voltage flowing into the remaining electrical system.

Now, you did do the first step correctly.
DC volt meter to battery terminals to see if you get 13-14 volts DC with engine running.
Next, locate voltage regulator and unplug connector for wires coming FROM the regulator, and hook up the DC voltmeter.
With engine running, you should have 13-14 (or so) DC volts.

If not, locate and unplug wires coming from alternator to regulator, and hook up AC (note change from DC to AC) voltmeter.
With engine running, should have AC voltage (this could be 20-40 volts or more).

This will let you know where the problem is, and what needs to be replaced.

Charging system problems

Hi Anonymous, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12 volts or better after charging.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.
7. To test voltage regulator go to:
8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor. Good luck

Find the Regulator & unplug. Connect a AC volt meter to the 3 white wires at the connector that is unplugged from the reg. connecting the 2 red & black meter leads to ANY 2 white wires at the plug (colors don't matter with AC. Run the bike & rev up. You should have starting at about 30 volts ac Up to about 90 volts ac reved if the Stator is good. Now move the 2 meter leads to 2 more white connections & check again. Now you have one more pair of white connections to check. Should have the same 90 volts on any of the 3 pairs of whites (3 phases). If they are low, The startor inside the cover is burnt--Replace it. If good, Then the Regulator/Rectifier Unit that rectifies ac to dc & then regulates the output at 14 ~ 14.5 volts DC on the red & ground (Green or black or housing ground) to go to the battery is the only other part that is for charging. You can't test a regulator other than to see if you have 90 v AC going into it & the plugged in it should be showing 14 Volts DC at the battery terminals , Not just 12 volts. Make shure you have a fully charged GOOD battery before tests or the readings will all be off.

Yes, you can use an external AC charger to charge it. The charging specification is between 100-240V 50HZ. So your mp3 is safe for charging. Goodluck.

Battery keeps going dead. i can jump start my bike and it remains running. I charged the battery correctly and it is still not holding a charge. do i need a new battery or is it the recitifer?

The first thing you need to do is test your charging system. The easiest way to do this is by using a digital multimeter with the setting set on AC Volts, start the bike and connect the meter to the battery, the meter should read between 13-15 volts AC. rev motor a little and watch meter to see if volts go up it should. If the volts rise then your charging system is functioning properly. If the volts are less than 12 volts then you may need to take the bike to a shop to have further testing done by a mechanic to see if it is the stator or regulator/rectifier.

Battery will not charge

To check your charging system, first, you must have a fully charged battery in the bike. Start the bike up and using a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) put the red lead on the positive post and the black lead on the negative post. Put the meter in DC Volts, 50 volt range. Idle the bike up a bit and you should read about 14.5 to 14.8 volts.

If you don't get anymore than 12.6 volts at the battery. Go to the left side of the engine and pull the connector for the stator at the front of the engine. Put your meter in AC volts, 50 volt range. Touch one meter lead to one pin and the other to the other pin. It makes no difference which lead goes where just don't allow the lead to touch the engine case. Your meter should read 25-35 Volts AC at this point. Notice the AC, not DC, voltage at the stator. Make sure your meter is in DC at the battery test and AC at the stator test. If you have less than 15 volts at the stator, your stator is bad. If the voltage is where it should be at the stator, you voltage regulator is probably bad.

Kawasaki vn2000 not charging how do you test system

voltage from stator or alternator is measured in AC volts after it passes through the voltage regulator it is measured in DC volts.the volts at low rpms should be around 12 and go up to 14 or so when rpms are increased. not sure what proper AC volts should be (mine are aprox. 45-50)at isolated stator wires,they are not measured against ground but against one-another

I wnat to test the alternator of my Focus ZX3 2002.I think that it isn't working properly.I need to know what is the voltage that I should find with the engine running without load, and also the voltage...

With a good fully charged battery no load should be 13.4 to 14.2 volts DC, loaded 13.4 to 14.4 volts DC. You can also check the AC volts it should not be over 0.040 volts AC a higher reading indicates a diode problem (batteries won't charge with AC voltage).
