Sounds like it is starving for either fuel or air. Check the air filter, spark plug and get some fresh fuel from the gas station. Try to put an additive in your fuel called "seafoam", you can find it at an automotive store.
It may need a professional to give it a good tune up.

Why is the engine running rough after a few minutes and the spark plug gets carbon on it?

Could be your choke is not shutting off like it should and some mowers the choke is on when you put the throttle wide open. Cut the speed back just a little and see if that helps.

Engine only runs with choke on. Blue smoke comes out and engine runs rough or not at all

sounds like you have a bad Ring on the Piston or a blown head possibly. Blue smoke means Oil is getting into the combustion chamber. Full choke means you have to give this 'broken' engine a lot of gas to compensate for it's problem.
Do you change the oil at least once a year? Filthy oil or a lack of oil will kill an engine

My briggs and stratton mower runs rough but when I toggle choke on and off it runs better for awhile

have to use choke means fuel problem. Check your fuel cap vent, fuel filter. Fuel solenoid opening with key turn on. Remove hose from carb.and see fuel runs out.

Lawn Mower runs rough & dies has black sooty spark plugs

A good place to start would be to remove air cleaner assembly and give it a good wash and service and take a close look at choke assembly/lever to be sure it isn't sticking in on position, while trying to run it with air filter off..

Engine starts, runs for awhile and then inexplicitly quits. Starts up again and when it begins to quit, I push the primer button and it says running, but only for a little longer. When warm, it stays...

well you know you have a fuel starvation problem and it is not the filter. so begin by getting a rebuild kit for the carb, from a small engine repair shop, giving it a good soak in cleaner while it is in pieces. make sure all the passages are open and reassemble it. if you are not confident in your take apart and rebuild skills you can pay a shop to do it for you. i think your choke enrichment is doing OK, just like the primer, the basic keep it running supply is plugged.

I start the motorcycle each morning with the choke and let it run for about 2 mins and back off the choke all the way and rev it a couple of times and it idles a little rough but stays idling. When reving...

1. When you rev it up, has it reached its normal operating temperature?
2. If you know how to then check your timing as it sounds like a little off at the moment. When did you have it adjusted last?
3.You can add some fuel cleaner when filling up again and run with it until the tank is low again.
God enough, then return a comment. Thanks

My engine was working fine for about an hour, then started sputtering and finally quit. I re-started and it ran for about 10 min and the same thing happened. I tried again today and the same thing...

Check filter of course but also you might think of doing a carb cleaning also.Sounds like you might have something floating around in the carb, maybe even a little water in your fuel.If its running better in choke mode it's starving for fuel have carb checked and cleaned. Good luck

John Deere L120 appears to run out of gas

This is the most common problem with the L120 I'm told. The pin hole in the gas cap needs cleaning (top and underneath as well). I have replaced mine twice already and have only 140 hrs. on it. Starts right up after cleaning. (My symptoms were identical to yours)

My husqvarna GTH2448T has to be choked to run

check the fuek lines for hole and leaks, check the fuel filter and clean if necessary. remove the carbuerator and inspect the gasket; it should be soft and flexible, if it seems hard or brittle replace it. clean the carb with carb cleaner sray (available at any local auto parts store) and compressed air. make sure you get inside the small fuel rail holes.
