Dryer won't stay running

I have a GE DBSR453EBOWW dryer that will start when you turn the start switch but as soon as you release the switch it stops. If you hold the switch in the start postion it heats and dries cloths. When I test the connections on the back of the switch, the brown wires have power and the red wires only have power when the switch is held on.

Should the start switch maintain power output on the red wire after the switch is released?

I had the same problem with my kemore. Thank goodness I still had it under warranty.
The tech said the door latch was just slightly ajar. This is common he said that when we take clothes out we let the door close to hard or gets ajar for leaning in to take clothes out.
He readjusted it and I have never had a problem with it again.
Hope this helps

Problem with my GE dryer mod: DBSR453EB1CC. Tried turning it on, and would stay on. As soon as you let the switch go. It shuts off. While its on the tumbler doesn't move. I would appreciate any advice....

Hello,

That sounds very typical of a broken belt. GE dryers use a belt switch that will cause exactly as your describing...the motor will run as long as holding the start switch and as soon as you release it the motor will stop if the belt switch is not satisfied that the belt is in place...so it again sound very much like the belt is broken.

The part number for the belt is WE12M29 it could be purchased at your local appliance parts store or online at;

I have a GE Profile Prodigy eletric dryer that wont start. When I turn the switch it hums and stops when I let go of the switch, but won't start. Is that a switch problem or motor? How do I tell?

Hello,

That sounds like to me the drum belt is broken..GE dryer use a belt switch that if the belt is broke will perform exactly as you describe ..as long as holding the start switch the motor will run and as soon as you release the start switch the motor will stop.

To check for a broken belt remove the top by removing the 2 phillips headed screws inside of the door at the top of it and pull off the top to see if the belt is in place and attached to the drum..if no belt seen when top off its broken and laying down in the base frame

Turn on dryer start switch, then release and dryer stops.

By now I'm sure you've solved your dryer problem, however for anyone else who this might be useful for...

This sounds like the same problem I had where the dryer switch was bad. When I pushed in the dryer switch, one of the terminal connectors wasn't staying connected, making the dryer stop when I released the switch. The switch was fairly easy to remove and replace.
