Question about Toshiba Satellite 2100CDS Notebook

1 Answer

Is the cpu permanently mounted to the motherboard on a Toshiba Satellite 2100CDS? Looking to upgrade cpu and ram, just wondering if its worth the effort? Maybe just look for another older laptop for around $200.00. Using it for email and some word applications in the kitchen only.

Can a Toshiba p15-s409 be upgraded to another motherboard and processor?

Motherboard is usually a big no when it comes to laptops as that motherboard was specific to that laptop. That is the way they are made. It will support a max 2GB of RAM, according to the specs.

The CPU? Well it depends on if, and that is a big if, the motherboard will support a faster P4 proc. I believe the fastest P4 that was made was 3.8Ghz, but have never found one. Then will the motherboard support a proc that fast? You have to look at the heat/cooling issue also.

If you don't want to get a new lappy, and don't have 2GB of RAM in it, then get more RAM. A 2.8Ghz with 2GB of RAM will run Win 7 fairly well.

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5084 CPU upgrade

It is possible but usually not worth the hassle.
Changing to another CPU chip that fits your motherboard may only show a 3-10% performance change.

See videos of CPU replacement in laptops like yours:

or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9a0hIPdVmc

In general, you are better off adding more RAM (memory) or replacing the hard drive with a faster SSD (Solid State Drive) to make a laptop "fly". Your laptop can hold a max of 8 GB RAM:

http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Toshiba-memory/Satellite+C655+Series/Satellite+C655D-S5084-upgrades.html

In MOST laptops, slower 5400 RPM drives are used, and this is the main performance bottleneck. A 7200 RPM drive or (better yet) a SSD drive will help matters, as will more RAM (the most cost-effective speed increase).

Toshiba Satellite A205-S5825 graphcs upgrade

This is a laptop correct?
If so you cannot upgrade laptop, Unlike a desktop the graphic's processor is built into the motherboard.
As for the CPU it is most likely also incapable of upgrade depending on most of almost all laptops
Laptop's are pretty much incapable of upgrades. (excluding RAM and HDD drives)

Which processor can I upgrade to?

Honestly, it is normally not worth it to upgrade the cpu on a laptop. Laptops are build to deal with a certain amount of heat and adding a faster cpu can cause the current cpu cooling fans to not get the job done anymore. You will seem instability in your system and could possibly damage it due to over heating.

With that said you would only be able to upgrade to a very slightly higher speed cpu and your money would be better spent else where. Some good ways to speed up a laptop are max out your memory or install a faster hard drive. For example if your current drive is a stock 5400rpm unit a 7200rpm drive would give you a nice boost. You could also look into a solid state option.

Both these upgrades will give your laptop a better boost without the hassle and risk of a cpu upgrade.

I have an old Toshiba 5205-S502 and it died buy new motherboard?

Yes, it is possible for you to get another motherboard for it, but I dont guarantee that you will get a new one. It all depends on your country though, because here in my country you can easily get a motherboard for it, for just 142dollars and even if you are very lucky, you can get A very new one, which will be removed from a laptop of the same type for you....well I would say it's going to be worth it ONLY
if you want to be using it for low-memory demanding applications...or better still you can just upgrade it...i.e your RAM size...not the CPU this time around.

Laptop freeze up and shutdown by itself, then can't boot up after

If it is still under warranty, you'd save yourself a lot of time and money if you just send it in for repair. If it isn't, the way to test if the RAM is bad is by trying to use the stick in another laptop or by trying to replace the RAM you currently have with RAM that you know is working (has worked on another computer). If the problem is with the motherboard or CPU, for most people it's better to just sell the laptop AS-IS with a good description on eBay and buy a new laptop.
