There is a firmware update posted on the Sony support web site. It takes care of the copy protect error. However, i have encountered an error where the recorder doesn't identify the input signal. It posts the message "waiting for input signal." I have no solution for this one yet.

I am trying to make a dvd from a HDD video cam to a sony DVDirect recorder VRD-MC3 and a message saying non supported USB devbice keeps comiong up. Can you hellp?

The manual of the DVD doesn't say much for models, say's sony HDD, sony DVD, so maybe it's not compatible. Do you have a memory stick for the handycam ? If you stored the video on the internal storage, check the manual to see if you can move it to the memory stick, then put the stick into the DVD player. Or you will need a PC to transfer it with USB, then get a memory stick and put all the video on in and not internal storage, if the DVD is not compatible with the handycam.

I have a scientific atlanta explorer 8300hd dvr that I want to offload the recordings to either an external hard drive or a pc or laptop''

The 8300DVR has a feature built in for outputting redcordings to a VCR. To output to a PC you will need a TVTuner card with RCA inputs. Pinnacle offers several products including a Hard Drive backup. You will follow these instructions below, the VCR will be your computer.

Copy a Recording to a VCR Tape
1. Connect the VCR to the OUT 2 connection on the back of the Explorer DVR.
See page 12 for more information.
2. Make sure that a tape is in your VCR and that the VCR is set to record.
3. Press List . The Recorded List
screen appears.
4. Press Move Up or Move Down
to highlight the recording you want
to copy to the VCR. Make sure to select
a program that is not currently being
recorded.
5. Press Select . The Recorded
Program Options screen appears.
6. Press Move Up to highlight “Copy
to VCR.”
7. Press Select . The Copy to VCR
screen appears.
8. Make sure your VCR is properly connected
to your DVR outputs, and press
Record on your VCR.
9. Press Start copy A . The recording
begins copying to VCR tape. The
Recorded List displays the VCR symbol
for the recording that is copying to
VCR.
Note: You can watch the copying in
progress through the PIP.

Motorola VIP1216 DVR and Sony VRD-MC5 Connections for Recording?

I have the same problem currently. I have successfully recorded to the Sony CM5 in the past from my DVR, but no longer can. I have Comcast and wonder if they have changed the DVR firmware and blocked output. Also some broadcasts have something in the signal to stop recording. I got half of my program done, and can't record the rest on DVD. I will try to DVR local news, then record to the Sony, to see if it's a signal issue or something with the Sony. I haven't tried to record from a VCR.

"Invalid Video Found" HDR-CX7 and VRD-MC5 DVD Recorder

The same happend to me. The camera contains informations of videofiles, which are no more present on the camera (were deleted from a computer). You are not able to record in full disk mode, or any other mode, which includes these videos. These missing files can be easily recognised, as the camcorder is not able to play them. Try to get rid of these "files", or ommit them from the recording list.
