Thank you for contacting FixYa. I would be more than happy to help you. The problem you mentioned seems interesting to solve..let's see what can
we do to fix this.
You said, as soon as you connect the adapter the computer shuts off, but on the battery it works. Here is what we can try to fix this : -
1. try to take out the battery and then start it with the adapter only. if it turns on then connect the battery else,
2. the motherboard port where the adapter connects to the system board has gone bad and needs to be replaced. you can get it fixed or soldered from a local technician.
3. Check the LED's status of your laptop by click here.
4. In case link doesnot work.
a. flashing, solid, solid : - Reseat the processor or replace the motherboard.
b. Solid , flashing , solid : - replace / reseat the memory.
c. flashing, flashing, flashing : - replace the motherboard.
d. flashing, flashing, solid :- replace the video card.
e. flashing, flashing , off :- reseat /replace the keyboard.
f. flashing , off, flashing :- Removing any USB devices.or Replacing the system board.

g. off, flashing, flashing : replace the motherbaord.

99% the motherboard has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
you can see the manulas for your computer by clicking here.

But, as per my understanding the motherboard needs to be replaced. you can contact a local technician who can fix that for you.

Sounds like your graphics card has broken, If you have 2 display ports on the back of the pc, try plugging it into that one

Dell latitude c640. turned on this morning and got the caps light to blink a few times and cd drive to power up then nothing. Just turned itslef off. Has been working fine until this.

several reasons why this will occur:

1) battery is not fully charged - you might try rebooting with the computer plugged into a wall socket.

2) computer's main power supply has been damaged and needs to be replaced.

3) virus - though with most standard virus' , you can still boot up, there are a nasty few that will wipe your entire computer including the operating system.

My dell latitude c640 keeps cutting off. i didn't receive any instructions when i purchased it off Ebay. What do you think the problem maybe?

If it is plugged in when it cuts off. I would say the mainboard is bad. If it does it when on battery power. Its probably just running out of battery.

C640 power issue

To my surprise, dell provides dis-assembly instructions online: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latc640/sm_en/sysboard.htm#1000473

I have the same problem but didnt see a bad solder (resoldered all connectors with no success). I may have a bad AC power supply or bad charge circuit - no idea)

It looks like Dell is pretty tight with this info. They want you to contact their tech support in one of these ways:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/contact_technical_support?c=us&l=en&s=gen

Before doing that though, I'd remove all power, unplug the CMOS battery and let it sit for a while before hooking the battery back up, applying power and see what happens.

Dell latitude c640 laptop

This could be caused by a number of thing, bad battery, bad power supply, bad memory chip, bad processor, and a bad component on the motherboard. Start by checking the output of the power supply with an ohm meter. The output rating will be on the power supply or you can go by the input in the machine. Then try starting without the battery. Then remove the memory and try with one chip then the other. At this point, if the problem persists, you will need to take it for a professional diagnosis. They will be able to test the processor and motherboard to find the exact problem component, and tell you whether it's replaceable.

Booting problem

Try putting the computer into safe mode by holding down on the F8 button and selecting safe mode during the boot process. Once you get to the safe mode screen and windows appears, restart the computer.

If that doesn't fix the problem you will have to restore Windows.
