Yes compressors do get hot it's normal. If your coils are dirty and covered with dust it will cause your compressor to run excessively as your unit cannot dissipate and get rid of its heat, also causes your compressor to work very heard, increases pressure as well - you will reduce the life cycle of your compressor this way. Get those condensers cleaned up, if they are at the bottom, you should have a fan next to the compressor, (condenser fan).

If after checking door gaskets, condensers, evaporator fan, and over frost problems / defrost then you might be low on charge and will need to have it checked by a qualified service person.

FRIDGE WONT GO COLD OR FREEZER FREEZE, POWER TURNED ON AND FAN WORKING freezer only chills

Hello, if the freezer fan is on, there are a couple of things you can check your self if able to. Behind the unit is where you have another fan, small coil, and the compressor. There should be a lower panel you can remove to excess these. Make sure it its plugged in and the cold control is set to where it is on.The little condenser fan motor should be running. If not, touch it and see if it is very warm. If so, the motor is faulty and needs to be replaced. If it is good, check the condition of the coil to see if it is clean. Air is pulled through the front of the coil to keep the freon cool and internal pressures down. see how dirty the front of the coil is. See if it has a sheet of lint or dust blocking the air flow and clean it as good as you can. This may be the problem. After you clean the coil, look at the compressor pot, and make sure it is running. It should be warn to the touch. Carefully lay your hand on top of it. If it is off and is very hot, it is off on external overload and this is more then likely the problem. Eliminate all other things first, coil cleaning, fan on, and make sure compressor is running. Get back to me and I will let you know where to go from here. It may just be a dirty coil, which would be great.
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

Usually when the outside of the refrigerator is hot, there is some problem in the refrigerant cycle. I suspect that if you reach under the refrigerator and touch one of the coils, it will be very hot, too.

First, look at the coils and see if they are dirty. If so, clean them good. Second, the compressor should be running properly (I assume it will be.) Third, make sure the compressor fan is turning. If this fan doesn't operate properly, the heat in the compressor coil will not be removed and transferred to the room air. It certainly sounds like the heat is not being removed from the coil since it is so hot.

If the compressor fan is not turning, you will likely have to replace the fan motor.

Door seals on both freezer and refridgerator door are hot to the touch. Is something going on?

It sounds like the refrigerant coils are too hot. This heat is being transferred from inside the body of the refrigerator.

The usual reason for this is a failed compressor fan. Look underneath the refrigerator near the compressor. You should see a small fan. This fan should be turning when the compressor is running. If it is not, you will need to replace the fan motor.

Look at the coils, too. Are they dirty? If so, clean them.

Frig is warming while freezer is staying cold.

No, A compressor will get hot for about three reasons.

Low refridgerant.
Lack of airflow, (maybe due to very dirty coils or bad condensor coil fan on modes with a fan)
Or high amp draw. (which would mean you have a bad compressor)

Its more common to be one of the first two, especially low refridgerant.

If the coils were really dirty, the compressor is probably just overheated. Let it cool down overnight then try again. If it still won't stay running it needs serviced. Could be the start relay or internal overload/overheat sensor in the compressor. If the coils were really dirty and it was used like this for a long time, the compressor could be damaged. It is almost never worth replacing a compressor in a home refrigerator.
