You need to start the computer on safe mode and that by clicking on F8 as soon as you start the computer and before you go to any screen…that will take you to a window with many options that allow you to go to the C; drive or safe mode or it can allow you to restore to the last good config. if you need more help just post your question I will try to addressee it… let me know how that work for you and please do not forget to rate my service so we can improve on it with your help. The computer is missing a very important file that allow window to work, when this file get effected or missing you will not be able to use it without the original CD. The other thing is by trial and error and as we do not have the system in front of us we cannot do much without someone telling and doing what we need to do. If you were able to get as far as F8 and r that mean the computer is looking for the CD to download the missing files and the r is for repair. Not much we can do without that CD as this is a legal issue to miss with and you must get the recover disk or the original OS CD, I am sorry but you may have someone keep trying but you are lost without that…let me know how that work for you and please do not forget to rate my service so we can improve on it with your help. God bless

Every computer comes with an OS (operating System) and they are Windows XP or Vista or Mac, etc. your computer if it is laptop usually has a sticker under the computer that contain the operating system and id, serial number. With this number, you may be able to get an updated version of the operating system that contains the missing files. If you get update version it is better than buying full version (lots of $$) anyhow if you are in the USA see best buy may have a specials on it you may get one for under $100. (it is depend on the one under your computer) they will give you the CD, when you get the CD start the computer and click F2 as soon as you pushed start that will take you to a setup window, go to the driver section and select your CD as your driver #1 that way the computer will start from the CD, when the computer start it will ask you if you need full instillations or to fix, (this is up to you if you have anything you need to save or not) after few windows your computer will have a new OS that you can do anything you need...let me know how that work for you and please do not forget to rate my service so we can improve on it with your help. God bless

First, we will try to save your old disk by trying to repair the old system

Start on safe mode by clicking F8 as soon as you push the power button

Insert the XP update in the CD driver

Follow the directions to lead you to try to repair

    If that did not work

First start the computer and keep pushing F2and or del to go to the computer setup

You will go to another window that shows the time, date, year, how many drivers you have, the memory sections, etc.

You need to go to the section that relate to the drivers, and select CD on that one select it to be #1 so it will start first before the hard driver. Usually the computer start from drive C; which is the hard disk but we are telling the computer to start from the CD

Now it will ask you to push F10 to save and exit or something of that facts say ok and when it is down put the XP in the CD and start the computer and when it start it will ask you to push any key or it will start from the CD do not do anything let it start from the CD and that will take you to Microsoft window that ask you few questions about new installations or fixing, etc. you can select anyone from them.

There should be a hidden partition (D) on your HDD that has an image of your operating system on it.

Re-install bundled software without CD
Acer eRecovery Management stores pre-loaded software internally for easy
driver and application re-installation.
1 Boot to Windows XP.
2 Press <Alt> + <F10> to open the Acer eRecovery Management utility.
3 Enter the password to proceed. The default password is six zeros.
4 In the Acer eRecovery Management window, select Recovery actions and
click Next.
5 In the Recovery settings window, select Reinstall applications/drivers and
click Next.
6 Select the desired driver/application and follow the instructions on screen
to re-install.
At first launch, Acer eRecovery Management prepares all the needed software
and may take few seconds to bring up the software content window.

If you have any problems, go to the Acer website downloads section, enter your computer info, and when the downloads come up, click document to get the manual for more instructions on recovery

Hi,

Follow :-

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

If the problem still persists,

Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM or \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE

1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4. Enter in the administrator password when requested
5. cd \windows\system32\config
6. Depending on which section was corrupted:
ren software software.bad or ren system system.bad
7. Depending on which section was corrupted
copy \windows\repair\system
copy \windows\repair\software
8. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

If that doesn't work or you can't get into the repair console then With the XP disk you choose to install Windows XP and when you choose to install over the current XP installation you will be given the option to repair the current Windows installation and you won't lose all of your data.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

You might have got a CD when you purchase the Notebook. If not, you need to purchase it from Microsoft. Every user has it's own copy.

Note - Avoid Pirated and Illegal numbers. It might caught you in jail and you might need to pay millions as Federal Charges. Always use own CD.

    Thanks.

All I am getting on a aspire one net-book is windows\system32\config\system error please help as I tried the alt F10 couldn't get it to work

The first step in recovering from this problem is to boot into the Recovery Console and replace the missing or damaged system file with a backup copy. To do this, you will need an original Windows XP CD, or a recovery CD from your computer's manufacturer, or a set of 6 Windows XP boot disks. If you do not have any of these, please visit our tutorial on creating Windows XP boot disks at www.schrockinnovations.com/makeboot1.php.
Once you have booted from your Windows XP CD or floppy disks, press the letter "R" at the first screen asking you for input. The computer will now ask you "Which Windows installation would you like to log onto." Each profile is represented with a number. Press the number associated with your profile (usually the number 1) and press enter. Now you will be prompted to 'Type in the Administrator Password." Enter your password and press enter (if you do not have a password to log into Windows, simply press enter).
After you enter your password (or simply press enter) you should be at a prompt that reads "C:/windows". Type the commands below to navigate to your Windows/System32/Config directory and replace the appropriate file:
  1. cd system32
  2. cd config
  3. ren system system.old
  4. cd .. (note the space after cd it is important)
  5. cd .. (note the space after cd it is important)
  6. cd repair
  7. copy system c:\windows\system32\config
If you were not able to log into your Windows profile in the recovery console, or if you were not able to navigate to the windows/system32/config directory, this likely means that the directory is gone. We have seen multiple reports of this occurring, and there is no discernible pattern that would indicate what is causing this problem at this time. This directory contains information required by Windows to boot, as well as information about your installed programs and saved passwords. If you currently are receiving the error "Windows/System32/Config/System file missing or corrupt," there is nothing you can do to remedy this problem.

\Windows\System32\Config\System; Repair w/CD-ROM; NO CD-ROM

if you can get an external cd/dvd drive from a friend, then you could solve the problem.

other solutions would mean that you will reinstall windows again. This takes more time and has a few tricks to be done from a flash drive.
