We bought a Vizio LCD/HD tv for our daughter and she has had nothing but trouble with it. The current problem is that there is a dark streak that runs vertically around the center of the screen. It doesn't look like dead pixels because it's more of a "smudge". Do you think it's fixable or would it be cheaper to just replace the TV? By-the-way, it's out of warranty and Vizio has the worst customer service ever. Thanks! Mary Ann, Knoxville, TN
You seem to be describing a damaged LCD panel. Parts and service are extremely difficult and expensive for your set if parts and the service information could be found.
Generally speaking, the cost of replacing a defective LCD panel would exceed the total value of your set.
When buying a new TV, stay with the big brand names. Shop around. When you pick out some models you think you like, do a search on the net to know how your choice was rated. I would recommend to stay with the bing brand names.

- Most of the time the lower priced sets are not worth to service. Operating and supporting a service department is very expensive. During warranty, its usually much cheaper to give the customer a new set.

Thank you Jerry. I thought a Vizio was considered a "big brand name". Do you think that repair places just do not replace LCD pannels? or no parts?

I purchased a W1603 15" LCD, using it for a TV. Has been working for 6 months, now the remote will not control the TV. Yes, I changed the batteries. I can control the TV with the side buttons. The indicator light on the front of the TV is not on. It is usually red when the TV is off and turns blue when turned on. At this time, there is NO light, whether the TV is on or off. I've unplugged the power for a while and still does not work correctly. I don't think the indicator light has anything to do with the remote, but I thought it might have something to do with the remote not controlling the TV. Any ideas?
