Nah dont assume that.

the ECU (PCM) almost never dies, on 96, never ever seen one fail 96+.

ok ?

post what the symptoms are ,not that someone is working on car.

and the ECU for sure can be repaired cheap.
in fact I have a repair page just for Kicks.
Trackicks we call them.
and I have a parts finder NOW for 1996,

shows which transistors drive what devices on the motor
Outputs are top fail ( and rare as hens teeth , unless some **** didnt hot wire ECU actuators, injectors etc.)

post the symptoms.
stop guessing.

my ECUpage

or find a new mechanic.

It is not uncommon to find may problems on an ignored car.
no tunes ups, fluids, lube , filters.
Thermostats, hoses, belts and clogged ISC and EGR.

Yes the ECU can in fact be repaired, im an electronics tech,
see my page, it shows a way to cheat and go right to the bad part.
like a dead injectors, lets say #1
so change #1 transistor.
solved.

Can a weak brainbox cause fuel to be mixed with engine oil

Why do you think there is fuel in the oil? Does it smell like it? Or is the dipstick level climbing? Tell us more about the problem and what you have already tried/done. When was the car last fully serviced? Poor maintenance is no excuse for poor running.

Range rover thermostat

I would agree. Trying a new thermostat is standard procedure to try and stop overheating, before getting into more expensive options. Thermostats can get stuck and not open fully, restricting circulation of coolant.

96 Firebird, Replaced water pump, fuel pump - Now blows head gasket.

Get yourself another mechanic. This guy is not doing his job. It shouldn't cost $1600 to change a water pump and fuel pump. No proper mechanic would remove a thermostat to replace the O-ring and put the old thermstat back in. It wouldn't be uncommon for the coolant level to drop after changing the thermostat. It probably only needs to be topped up. No, the motor doesn't have to come out to replace the head gasket and I don't see it costing $2500. Before you spend any more money there, take the car somewhere else and get another opinion. I bet that if you fill up the coolant bottle for 2 0r 3 days it will stop losing coolant. Hope this helps.

Can't find main brain box on 2001 Hyundai xg300

Below is a picture of the location of the PCM ("brain") BUT (and there's always a but) I'm thinking there may be other issues and not sure how well you know the mechanic but have been in this business for 25 plus years and have found that if the PCM goes out in a Hyundai that the vehicle will just not run. In most cases if you are getting a repeat code then it's either a sensor or a wiring issue. What trouble code keeps on popping up ? I say this because a rich or lean condition can be many things from an oxygen sensor to the mass airflow sensor and many in between so If I knew what code you were getting this may narrow down the sensor or at least what circuit you are dealing with. Besides all that you just don'y replace the "brain" like any other part. It needs to be programmed to your vehicle and some learning procedures need to be done and I know that you would be lucky to get a "brain" for under $300.00 and would hate for you to waste that money. I'm just an outsider and you may know this mechanic personally but if he has already replaced a part with no change then the proper diagnostic testing was not done. There are tests to rule out parts/sensors so mistakes are not made and the proper part is replaced. If you are mechanically inclined I may be able to help you in diagnosing (for sure) what the problem is. I would need the trouble code your car shows in order to be able to do this. You can reply/comment here or email me directly at csautomotivecars@att.net with all your information including the year and model of your vehicle. I don't mind helping and yes it won't cost you anything. I just have seen it too many times of people getting ripped off by mechanics or the wrong parts get replaced. Being in the business myself it makes it hard because so many mechanics rip off people who just don't know any better and it makes it ******* us few honest mechanics to have customers trust us. There was a recall on the PCM but it didn't say what the symptoms were. If your vehicle was produced between Aug, 24, 2000 & Sept. 30, 2000 your vehicle may have been part of that recall.

I HAVE A MAZDA 626 98 AMERICAN MODEL WITH BRAINBOX NUMBER F82F-12A650-GF. THE BRAINBOX IS DAMAGED AND I HAVE LOOKED EVERY WHERE WITHOUT SUCCESS OF REPLACING THE BRAINBOX WITH THE SAME NUMBER. CAN U HELP...

Majority problem on the ECU is the leaky electrolytic capacitors.
If you has the time to do soldering then you can fix the brain box for under $15 vs $120+ for a use one.
Just open the cover and look for damage (over-heated + leaked) capacitors.
