Question about Apple Power Mac G5 Desktop

1 Answer

My Power mac G4 Quicksilver has problems. When i boot it up the chime comes on, and i see the boot up screen. Although in the middle of the screen there is a folder that is blinking a ? mark sign. I tried putting the CD in their to reinstall the OS, but because of that i somehow messed up my Super Drive. Help please.

I ment that the super drive that was installed is not working, altough i managed to get another superdrive from apple. I incerted the Cd in and the drive works but nothing happens.

Also i just recently resetted the "boot-ram" so now i' hoping my new 10.5 CD works.

    Any other advice?
    And thanks for your comment.

The folder with the blinking question mark means that your Mac cannot find a bootable system on the internal drive. This usually means either that the drive has been corrupted or is not accessible. The proper repair procedure is to boot from the system installation CD and use the Utility menu to run Disk Utility / Repair Disk on the internal drive. But at this point, I'd have to ask you to elaborate on your claim that you "messed up your Super Drive" before I can figure out how to proceed from where you are.

I'd like to help solve your problem, of course. I'm not sure how to interpret "the drive works, but nothing happens," which sounds contradictory. Can you please elaborate? The more information I have about what you are doing and what exactly you are seeing, the better help I can give.

I guess one way to interpret your statement is that the drive operates physically but no CD shows up on your desktop. It's possible you connected power to the optical disk but not data. Open System Profiler and click on the ATA tab. Do you see your optical drive there or not? It will have a name similar to "MATSHITADVD-R ".

I have a powermac G4. When I turn it on it chimes but there is no display and a red light on the motherboard. Checked the power supply - all voltages are good. Bad motherboard or video card?

There is one red LED on the Power Mac G4 QuickSilver logic board. It indicates that there is power to the board and does not imply a fault condition.

Do you hear mechanical activity from the drive? It is possible the machine is running fine except for the display or graphics card. Try another display. If you have another Mac, you can also try starting the machine in target disk mode by holding down the T key at boot (your machine was built in 2001, so it should have this feature) and see if you can access the internal drive from another machine. This should eliminate the motherboard as the culprit.

I tried to hook up my power mac g4 tower to a monitor and the screen is not coming on. It states monitor is on, now connect to computer.

Really, the only way to troubleshoot this problem is to connect your display to another computer and see if it functions; then connect your computer to another display and see if it functions. Once you have determined which unit isn't working correctly, you can proceed from there.

Powermac g4 shut down

OK it's a G4 iMac.
Burning smells coming from macs often indicate a failure in the power supply module. That said, the G4 iMac (in my experience) has been the most reliable iMac ever and power module failures are very rare.
Your best option is to find a Mac repair centre near you and take in in for a quote. But be warned - it will cost. For some reason known only to Apple power supply modules are expensive (but not as expensive as the equivalent volume of HP ink) and replacing them is not as easy as on many of the other computers.
If it is the power supply, you will not be able to switch it on again. Your data on the HD should be safe (unless the smell was coming from that - - I've had it happen!). So when you get to the workshop and you've had your quote, if you decide not to go ahead with the repair, ask the workshop to remove your HD and put it into an external case so that you can plug it in to another Mac and continue using it.
Let us know what the outcome is.

No Apple-Certified Tech repairs boards at the component level, and no component-level repairs are authorized by Apple. You clearly have a serious problem in either your logic board or graphics card. An Apple Tech or Apple Store would perform tests on each suspect replaceable unit, identify the bad unit, and replace it with a good one. I sympathize with the fact that this type of service is unlikely in your country, but by the same token, you are not at all likely to find anyone who can provide you an answer to the particular question you are asking. Sorry.

The power button is only working periodically

Hello,
On these PowerMac G4 desktops, the powerbutton works when you press hard and long on it.
If this continue even doing so, I would recommend to take the Mac for repair.

My iBook G4 continues to run slowly and/or freeze

Try resetting the PRAM by turning on the iBook then holding option + command + P + R and wait till u hear another chime. If it still freezes, it may indicate an application may be causing it to lock up hold shift after you hear the chime to boot OS X into safe boot.

First, you need to eliminate the video card or the Kogi as the problem, which is quite easy to do by testing a known working monitor on the Matrox card.
