If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, this is usually a sign that the motor coupling has broken. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are other common symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

If you have questions about this repair, or if you require additional assistance, please post back with your model number (located along the wash tub rim under the lid), so that I may be able to provide you with better service. I hope this helps you.

You can hear water behind the drum when you spin

I don't believe you have a problem with your washer. It is NORMAL to have residual water in the drain lines and drain pump following a wash cycle. You will be able to hear the water sloshing around if you move the drum or drain lines. This is the lowest point of the drain cycle and gravity will ALWAYS cause some water to be there. As long as the water is not visible in the spin basket inside the drum, and the washer is properly draining during the wash and rinse cycles, you have nothing to worry about.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this is helpful to you.

I have a maytag over capacity plus heavy duty 2 speed 10 cycle washer it fills with water fine you hear the motor kick in to girate but doesent spin or you put it on spin cycle it sounds like it is...

The motor is working, but the mechanism not engaged by the helix so the shaft can not move therefore no agitation or spinning. Motor is designed to turn 2 directions: clockwise and counterclockwise for agitation and spinning. Therefore there are 2 mechanisms to assist these tasks. The drain is control by a separate pump and it is still good also.
The tube has to be out to replace the helix for agitation and a part to engage with the spinning rotation to release the brake so the spinning function can work. These parts are cheap, but the the labor is not. Hope this can help

My washer fills up, but not inside the machine. If I put the machine on spin, the water drains out. Why won't it fill inside the machine?

The water is going into the machine, but somewhere below the inside drum. I can hear it sloshing around if I move the inside drum. If I put it on the spin cycle, it does not spin, but the water comes out of the hose and into the sink.

AFTER SPINNING, WATER IS LEFT SOMEWHERE IN THE DRUM. i CAN'T SEE IT BUT CAN HEAR IT AND THE WASHER SMELLS BAD.

Check to see if there's something stuck inside the pump or the drain hose connected to the pump (pump is usually located at the bottom and towards the back of the washing machine).

Water remain in the machine

the washer has a fluid filled ring around the drum to balance it as it spins, assuming do not actually see or feel water you may be hearing that liquid.

Washing machine not draining

If you are confident you can do it pull your pump off washing machine and pull the pump houseing apart most will come apart and make sure there is nothing in the pump maybe a small piece of plastic or other item in it. you could also try taking the hoses off the pump and just flush water through it backwards this will also sometimes work I have come across this a lot and normally it is something in the pump interupting the water flow. There may also be sand or small pebbles in the drain holes under the adgitator if flushing the pump doesn't help check under the adgitator for something in the holes. Hope this helps
