SOURCE: Sony Cybershot
I do have the same problem on my W55 purchased in Jan 08 and may I add that I,m extremly careful (grown up with the old and expensive "analog" stuff). So dont put the blaim on you.
The warranty is still on so I will let you know what the repairman tells me in hopefully a short while.
The commonly advocated sollution on the net is to give the camera a god knock just where the "Cybershot" logo is. But in my opinion, knocking the camera about can,t be the right thing.
All this indicates to me that the problem should be a loose contact just where the flat connector from the LCD enters the rest of the electronics, in which case the repair would be very simple once you opened the housing...but we,ll see.
I also would like to mention that my wife has the old preseries type W45 (replaced in 07 by the W50 series) and unlike me she is NOT careful (rolling in the sand, droping it on rocks forgetting it in the rain and so forth) and it still works perfectly. This made me curious. Examining and comparing made it obvious that something dramatic must have happened in the SONY Quality-thinking.
Personally I WILL RESTRAIN FROM BUING SONY IN THE FUTURE.Especial as it seems that once you bought their **** they lose all intrest in you...aftersales service is not in their dictionary.

hi try to reset ur camera...To do such reset, turn on the camera and hold the menu button down for longer than 5 seconds. A message should hopefully come up on your LCD asking if you want to reset the camera. Select Yes...thank u!!!

OK, this can either be that your LCD has an internal crack. You can actually test it by doing the following. If you power on the unit and you can still take a photo, which comes out normal, it is a bad LCD.
You can get the LCD of your camera repaired at your nearest camera repair store for under $30.
If the camera does not take a photo when you snap something, it can also be a lens error.
For now, test the above solution. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

SOURCE: I bought a Sony Cyber-Shot
you turn off the LCD screen and use the viewfinder, same problem? Even
with this wrong, are you try to take pics and see this in your pc? They
are white or with some lines over image?
Two things there, first... could be a problem with the viewer screen, or, second choice could a problem CCD sensor go to bad; in both cases this isn't a job that you could solve yourself; this wrong include distorted images or abnormal colors, scratchy purple lines, blank or black pictures, and/or black videos with good sound being recorded on the camera's flash card.
I suggest check THIS LINK for additional details in this previous solutions for an Defective CCD (Charge Coupled Device) and next contact your Olympus service. I strongly suggest (taking into consideration the age of your camera) to evaluate the cost of repair versus the cost of a new camera with similar features, before making a final desicion.
Keep in mind and check if even you are underwarranty, if yes, applied.
Hope this helps.
