How do I install a DVD drive as well as my CD-RW?

My system currently has a hard drive and cd-rw connected to the single IDE connector on my motherboard. How do I connect a DVD writer as well when I only have the one IDE connector???? I have a BenQ 5232X-0C3 52x32x52 drive. I just installed it in my computer but the computer isnt detecting it. I connected the IDE cable, power cable and a little black 3 or 4 wire connector. The drive opens and closes, spins the disk and the green light is on but the happens on the computer. please help.

Mst...First, get your manual out. the drive must be set to be a secondary device unless it is not. You say you have only one IDE...did you remove the CDR? If you have a second IDE or other board connector, then this drive is primary on that. Now, did you install the drivers for the unit? You can use your CDR to do that or get them from the website of the manufacturer. Are there any bent pins on either the motherboard or the back of your drive? Somewhere in there is an answer.

If you have only one drive connector set, you can get a board which will allow you to setup additional drives. Ask your dealer.

Replacing DVD/CD drive

Look inside of your tower, you will have a few different cords connecting to your DVD/CD drive.

It should either have a 4 pin Molex connector and an IDE or a Sata connector and power.

The IDE cable looks like this:
http://s7d1.scene7.com/is/image/officedepot/311075_vw_etz00_10055684?$OD%2DLarge$

The Molex connector looks like this:
http://assets.hardwarezone.com/2009/img/data/articles/2004/1215/tutorial-4pin_molex_power_conn.jpg

IDE is an older tech that uses a 4 pin molex to connect it.

Now, if you have something that looks like this:
http://www.sierra-cables.com/Cables/images/SATA-Signal-Cable-1.jpg

It uses Sata, and the power cable looks like it as well, it's just longer.

To make sure the DVD drive you're working will work with the current DVD/CD's you have, just look on the front of the CD you are going to use, in truth it usually should work with anything. It's even RW so you can re-write data to RW CD/DVD types.

Pretty much, just make sure that it uses the same power type and data connector as your current one. Power type being the 4pin molex or the Sata power plug. Data type being the IDE cable or the Sata cable.

If it matches, it will work :) I hope this helps.

Anybody knows which CD rw hardware need to buy to install in emachine T3882?it's belongs to my nephew and I am trying to help him since his dvd cdrw slot broke down and I need to replace it. thanks.

There is two types of connectors SATA and IDE when you look at the drive plugs on the back of the current CD ROM you will either see a long IDE connector about 2.5 inch's with two rows of holes or a small normally black connector with on single ****. Do not confuse the data connector with the power connector. the link below will show you the difference.
http://www.yourdictionary.com/images/computer/_SATPAT.JPG. Once you determine the type of connector click the relevant link below for options IDE http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=482&name=DVD-Burner&Nav=|c:89|&Sort=0&Recs=10 SATA http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1624&name=Internal-SATA-DVD-Burner&Nav=|c:89|&Sort=0&Recs=10

Acer 5102 with xp, It wont boot from cd.

Make the DVD your 1st option for booting. It's also your CD drive but is identified as the DVD RW. Once this is made your default (make sure you accept and save the change before exiting) with your installation disk in the drive, boot up and it will read off the disk and prepare your system for install. If your disk is bootable, this will work.

    Sony DVD RW DRU-820A

    HI,
Double check the Ribbon Cable Connector is installed Correctly ( 40-80 Strand IDE ) sometimes if these are not fitted squarely Or pushed in hard enough. Can cause a Problem.
Also try the emergency eject procedure on The Drive. Small jewellers screwdriver Or Needle, insert into the drives faceplate ( pinhole in drives faceplate drawer ) push to open dvd drawer. pull out drawer Gently. And push back in. This ocassionally works for a stcking Drawer/eject mechanism.
Finally try the drive without a disk in ( open/eject Or Close )

Hi, please check the power connector to the drive. if it is ok, restart the pc, enter BIOS setup, check whether the drive is detected or not in the drive configuration. if not there, check the jumper settings once again. for the new motherboards with one IDE and SATA interfaces, jumper settings are important. once i had the same problem.

    Install to computer problem

    Hi,

Sounds like a case of jumper settings. If the CD-RW was installed as secondary IDE to an existing hard drive which is the Master, pls set jumper to SL. They are located at the rear of the CD unit between the IDE connector and the audio out.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

    Good luck and kind regards.

    Thank you for using FixYa.
