Here is a transcript of a chat I had with Lexmark Tech. Support. Please contact them at www.lexmark.com for additional assistance.
1) Remove the cartridges from the printer and turn off and on the printer.
2) Question, if my friend is using third party ink refilled cartridges, would this be a possible failure? I do not know that he is, but when I worked for Lexmark at the Tech Support Center in Lexington this was forbidden.
"Yes, it may affect the functionality of the printer. That could be the reason why the lights are flashing."
3) If the flashing light stops flashing with the cartridges out, does this mean it is a cartridge failure?
" Yes, that is a possibility. If you are using genuine Lexmark cartridges, I suggest you just pull out the power adapter and put it back after 30 seconds."

Try to re-seat the cartridges in the printer. Open the printer
cover > remove the cartridges > close the printer cover > re-brick you
printer by pulling out the power supply - black box behind the printer where
the power cord is plugged in, and re-plug after 10 seconds. When the printer
turns on, reinsert the cartridges and close the cover. Try to print a document
again to verify that the problem is fixed.
If that doesn't help, the problem could be due to a clogged print
cartridge nozzle. Please follow the steps below to fix print quality issues
with your model:
From the Maintenance tab, select Clean to fix horizontal streaks. Your printer will then print a page forcing ink through to clean the print cartridge nozzles.
