IBM ThinkPad T20 - 0190 Critical Low Battery - Will not boot

My T20 will not boot up. Sometime it appears to have enough power that it shows the 0190 Critical Low Battery error then crashes. With another laptop I have confirmed that the A/C Adapter works. I've tried to charge four new batteries in the T20 but they do not appear to charge.

On another post a recommended solution for this same problem was to replace the CMOS battery. I have not tried this yet and I'm not sure if this solution worked for the other person.

Your help is sincerely appreciated.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Yes, the lights do come on until the 0190 Critical Low Battery error and system crash.

The laptop will not boot at all without the battery inserted.

Thanks. Look forward to additional ideas and a possible solution.

I know what the error is what it is is a wire labeled "MAIN" has disconected to fix it you need to put the wire back into the tiny slot in right bottom corner of the right hole

i had the same error and just fixed it like 2 minutes ago it now runs perfectly

When you boot, do the lights come on briefly, then go off? If so, the memory may be to blame.
Also, try booting without the battery at all.
Let me know.

    Hi again,

OK, if, with the ac adapter connected, and the battery out, the unit will not power up, you've got problems. It is not necessary to have a battery installed for the normal T20 to operate. Also, if it's not charging a battery, it would appear that the ac adapter plug may have disconnected from the mother board. Have you tried no adapter, but a fully charged battery?

The error code is for the bios or cmos battery.

    Good luck

Ibm think pad r32 0196 critical low-battery error will boot up then turns it self of

Fail safe in the battery has engaged. See if the computer will start without the battery, using just the power supply. If you can get it started then put the battery in and see if it will charge or reset the fail safe. Give it about an hour, then shut it completely down and restart it with the battery in. If it won't start at this point, then you will need a new battery. Also change the CMOS battery inside the computer

IBM Thinkpad T21

This is a common problem with the T20 series Thinkpad. The problem is with the power management chip. Unfortunately, you will have to replace the motherboard to fix it. Since these are a bit on the older side, you can get a motherboard off Ebay at a reasonable price.
