Your hard drive may be dead, the partition/boot sector is damaged or the motherboard seiral ata chip is bad. If it is one of the first two you will need to delete the partition, re-create the partition and format the drive. Take the drive out and install it in another computer as a slave and see if the drive is recognized and files are all there. If it works in the other computer try backing up the drive and then re-install it in the problem computer and try to format and re-install the system either using the installation discs that came with the computer. If the system utility to restore the computer is located on the drive you might have an issue. You can try using that utility if you have it and it may or may not work.

Here is a hardware test you can run to test the video and lcd screen. That came with your laptop

Diagnostics before windows using the F12 Diagnostics
* Reboot and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
* When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
* The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
* If the Pre-boot System Assessment completes successfully, you receive the message Booting Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition
* Press any key to continue
* Press any key to start the Dell Diagnostics from the Diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive
* After the Dell Diagnostics loads and the Main Menu screen appears, click the button for the option you want to run -
Express Test = Performs a quick test of devices. The test typically takes 10 to 20 minutes and requires no interaction on your part
Extended Test = Performs a thorough check of devices. The test typically takes 1 hour or more and requires you to answer questions periodically
Custom Test = Tests a specific device. You can customize the tests to be run
Symptom Tree = Allows you to select tests based on a symptom of the problem you are experiencing
* When you have finished running a test, close the screen to return to the Main Menu screen. To exit the Dell Diagnostics and reboot the computer, close the Main Menu screen

during the test it will BEEP ! it is asking you if colored bars are displayed. if the bars look ok then your screen is fine but if during anytime of this test and you see the distortion you described then its the LCD screen or LCD cable

hope that helps

Need help figuring this out. Complex!

Configuring your computer to boot from a USB drive allows you to boot into a separate operating system stored on a bootable USB drive.
This is handy when needing to troubleshoot a computer or access the hard drive without booting into the main operating system.
In order to boot from a USB drive, your computer's motherboard and BIOS must support USB booting.
If they do, then a simple tweak to the BIOS settings is all you need to do.

Shut down your computer and allow it to completely power off.
Insert your USB drive into an open USB port on your computer.
For ease of access, try to insert it into a front port if you have one.
Turn on your computer and enter the BIOS menu.
When your computer first boots, the manufacturer's logo will appear on the screen.
On the bottom of the screen is a note telling you which button to press to enter the BIOS.
Quickly press the button to enter the BIOS menu.
All manufacturers are slightly different, but some common buttons for entering the BIOS are F2, F10, F12, ESC and DEL.
If you are unsure, refer to the owner's manual that accompanied your computer.
Use the arrow keys to scroll down to the boot device menu.
It will be titled differently on different computers, but look for something like "Boot Order" or "Boot Devices."
Press the enter key to enter the boot menu.
Scroll down to "USB Drive" and set it as the first boot device.
Exit out of the BIOS menu and reboot your computer.
When your computer boots up it will boot from the USB drive first.

Ibm t30 -black screen comes up with missing operating system

Sir, It seems there is no Operating System(OS) installed in your laptop.
Check is you have got any Operating System (eg : Windows XP, Vista, 7) CD/DVD provided to you. Or else, try to get it from any computer retailer shop or buy it from microsoft.com. If you have any such CD/DVD, Insert it in the CD/DVD ROM (drive). And press f10 key during the boot screen (the black screen) and choose " First Boot Device " as Cd/DVD ROM and it will appear as " Press any key to boot from cd", press any key and you will get through the Operating System Installation Screen. Follow the procedures, at one point you should format the partition (drive) where you choose to install that particular OS. And follow the procedures, enter all information it asks like product key (it will found on the OS CD/DVD package) and other registration information. Once you done wit all these, your laptop will work fine. Thank You.

You can press Control-F11 when you see the 'Dell' logo after you turn the computer on. If this doesn't work right off the bat, hold control while turning the machine on and keep tapping F11 until you see it begin to boot. If you haven't deleted the restore partition in your attempt to reinstall XP, you should be able to restore the system to factory spec by doing this. You will lose any data you have obviously, but the malware will be gone as well.

Can not Boot from OnBoard SATA Hard drive.....it keeping looping...

Turn on (or restart) your computer.
When F2 = Setup, F12 = Boot Menu appears in the upper-right corner of the screen, press <F12>.
The Boot Device Menu appears, listing all available boot devices. Each device has a number next to it.
At the bottom of the menu, enter the number of the device that is to be used for the current boot only.

If this works and you want to change the setting permanently do the following:
Turn on (or restart) your computer.
When F2 = Setup, F12 = Boot Menu appears in the upper-right corner of the screen, press <F2>.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the Boot Sequence menu option and press <Enter> to access the menu.
NOTE: Write down your current boot sequence in case you want to restore it.
Press the up- and down-arrow keys to move through the list of devices.
Press the spacebar to enable or disable a device (enabled devices have a checkmark).
Press plus (+) or minus (–) to move a selected device up or down the list.
